OK...you can "be the boss" - what kind of show?

I see so many people on here (and yes, I gripe too) complaining about the programming HGTV is shoving down our throats. Many people have talked about the lousy designs shown.
So...you're the boss......taking into consideration all the posts you've seen here, what type of show would you put on the air? What kind of host would you hire? Do you want the audience to be educated or entertained or both? How many weeks would you give it to "grow on people"?
That's just for starters. Try to answer in positives rather than negatives - what you'd LIKE to see instead of what you HATE.
For me, I'd want to put on a show that was informative....shows a lot of design ideas that are somewhat middle of the road...not too expensive that I couldn't afford but not so cheap that I'd feel I was being tacky if I were to implement them into my house. An occasional side trip to the high end is okay...gives us something to shoot for. The host should be pleasant, knowlegeable, and able to stand still for more than 2 minutes, and not necessarily in the 20-30 age range. I'd want ideas and the cutting edge of design across a lot of areas, including selling a house, fixing up a new house, new construction and those you're raising your family in. And cost....realistic costs, please....if necessary give a range such as glass tile costs between ___ and ___ per sq. ft. We watch these show, I believe, because we care about how OUR homes look and how they function for our families and lifestyle.
Anyone????

How about a show about a regular house that goes through several steps of improving the outside and inside appearance? A house that real people live in.
Improvements that the homeowners gradually do themselves. Show the steps of how they did it with minimal costs. Suggestions on how to shop for the best prices. What tools are essential to have, etc?
I've been watching shows off and on for years for ideas besides renovating four houses myself.
"Look What I Did" is one of my favorites because it gives me new ideas and incentive.

I've posted this before.

The show I'd like to see has George Gray as the host, a must because his personality can be serious and funny in the right places to create a smooth transition between different styles and socioeconomic trends, like hip hop and French Country. He has that *look* that exemplifies the adventure inherent in the word design/art, (imho).

My show would be a Design News program with a global focus, and a fair balance of real folks vs. snobbery sprinkled with hard core architectural spots, design schools/colleges, and outside art trends that impact on the design world. And, feature each episode a designer and/or architect or other person who's work with the design world has made a valuable contribution; and, feature winners of design competitions when it is applies to an episode's theme.

I think people will benefit from being better informed about the world that fools around with our visuals, buildings, products, art and such. There's hair shows and clothes shows and attitude shows and surviving shows and races shows, we need a design news show.

Maybe at the end there can be a shot of a fake flower being installed in a happy person's home for that added touch of reality to not take ourselves so seriously that we close ourselves off to appreciating all areas of the design community.

My perfect shows would be Christopher Lowell's or Lynette Jennings's old shows on A&E, or Peter Fallico's Home to Go.

I want to see a show like surprised by design where the homeowner's room is made over without their knowledge, but in this case, I want the homeowners to be the hgtv "talent." Wouldn't that be great? Ms. Myles returning to a living room that Constance has decorated? Vern Yip coming home to find his dining room table cut down and his chairs replaced by cushions by Kim to create a "morrocan" look? Now, that would be entertainment.

Too funny! As we've mentioned on here before, there are only a VERY few designers any of us would let near our homes - do you suppose t.v. designers feel the same way? The possibilities are endless......Frank's chickens in Vern's ultra modern space - Hildi's latest horror in Candace's tastefully designed home - Kim's tackiness in Christopher Lowell's perfectly put together home.....

Ok- My show would be called "Home Sweet Home" and would have Lisa Laporta, George (whats up with that house), Chico, Lee Snijders and crew (design on a dime), and a carpenter. They would do make-overs on manufactured homes for owners that are not moving or trying to sell. They'll take them from shabby to chic. In some cases using faux treatments, in others quality upgrades like corian, appliances etc. The lucky owner gets to help in the planning at least. Maybe in the remodeling too. Less shown of the shopping trips.. just explain why you bought it when you show the item. Oh yes.. I'd have the little older guy in the suit that used to do a design show on it too.. michael someone?

Michael Paine? Yeah, he was one of my favorites too - I got such a kick out of him. A few years ago when I was starting my decorating career I had to mediate between a husband and wife who had very different ideas for their master bedroom - I could almost hear Michael Payne whispering in my ear as I brought the two together to agree on one design. He had some terrific ideas and some of the things I saw on that show still stick in my mind.

I would prefer a Host and a Designer. A different designer each week would be nice, or 4 or 5 of them rotating throughout the season.

The designer must be bona fide, educated and accredited with some experience, hopefully over 40 years old. I'd love to see rooms done in different styles...country French, MCM, English country, traditional, ultra-modern, Craftsman, Asian etc etc. What's the difference between Chinese and Japanese design? What is the Scandinavian influence? And so on.

Preferably, I'd like to see these rooms done in an actual house. However it would also be fun to have a sound stage room built and have the designer show how the same room can be in several different styles.

I'd like the emphasis to be on DESIGN not on price. For example, a vase can cost $15000, $1500 or $15 and each of us can choose the one in our range. But the designer should tell us what kind of vase to look for: such and such colors, this or that shape, which size is best.

Entertainment and education are not mutually exclusive. The best teachers make education fun and interesting. If they must err, err on the side of educational!

I'd also like to see a show about how color affects a room. More than the basics (we all know those) but how to choose colors off the color wheel, complimentary, etc and what they do to a room (sort of like Get Color used to do) and which colors reflect light and which soak it up. Which colors look better in a room with lots of sunlight, or a room with little natural light. Which colors make us hungry and which calm us down. In this case a real professional is absolutely required. We don't need Kim making up something that sounds good to her.

Also love to see a show about SCALE. They talk about it all the time but no one explains it well. Sometime I hear designers go into an empty room and rave about the proportions. I don't get that and I'd like to.

There's plenty more, but I won't take up anymore of your time or space. Wink

I would put a show like the one I have posted about. http://www.refusedreused.com

Rick Rifle and Kristin Casey are putting their talent to helping organizations such as homeless shelters, transitional housing and animal rescues. Not just one family like Extreme Home Makeover and the Big Give Million dollar pay out.

I think this NEEDS to be a show. But people are too stupid to realize great ideas when it smacks them in the face. ;-)

That may be a good organization but I would NEVER NEVER download anything to view a website. If they want to succeed, they better get that fixed real quick. Their opening paragraph tells me nothing about what they do, just what they aspire to. So I'd like to hear what they actually DO. Just a few helpful hints, I hope....

I agree with you about Christopher and Lynette. They had great shows with good ideas and how to do's. They don't need to act stupid or dress se*y to promote their shows because the shows were great and they know what they are talking about because they are true designers.
I don't know anything about Peter Fallico's Home to Go.

My show would be a week long special high lighting the homes of the the designers and hosts!Let everyone host their own segment.
I would love to see how everyone makes their homes unique to them. Let's get to know everyone! I think when we watch their show's after getting to know them would be great!

I'd like any show that included the following designers--none of them need a "host":

Sarah Richardson
Debbie Travis
Monica Pederson
Kristen (from old Design on a Dime)

Favorite hosts with rotating designers would be:

Joan Steffen
Clive Pearson (zic)
Joan Cohn (zic--old bath/kitchen shows)
