Thank you both.

My problem is with the background, it's too stark and 'flat'. The crackle will add some interest.

Can you just crackle the background? Or would that look too bad? I've never crackled before. As you can probably tell. lol

It looks good, however I've heard of painting the background with a "slip slap" method. That's usually done first. I must confess I've never tried it, but hope to do so.
