I don't understand why some of these contests use this recaptcha code on the entry forms. The words are always hard to read and the retyping and retyping is dumb. What is the reason for this addition to the contest forms when the big contests never use this?

Yup very well said .. this recaptcha is must to ovide spamming , spamming in the sense mostly people try to upload some virus site , due to which the other people have to suffer , and they are banned your their Signature
Captha is the essential part of any registration form.It is more important to avoid self promotion of the sites.It is also useful to verify human entries.
