They are always using these types of shelves on HGTV but I haven't been able to find them anywhere. Has anyone seen them at a local store? Or do I have to get them off the internet?

Floating shelves? IKEA has them. They have a variety of sizes and colors. Lowe's has them also, but I think they are more expensive than IKEA's. Since you indicate you are in Southern California, there should be an IKEA not too far from you.
