Hope I'm posting in the right place! I love so many HGTV shows and am always wondering how do I find the great shops to shop at in MY area? How do you find the unique furniture store or the awesome fabric store, etc? If i just search for furniture or fabric on the internet I usually only find the big name stores, which are fine, but I'd love to find the smaller, unique and interesting shops the designers on the shows always find. I realize they are professionals and have resources I don't, but does anyone know how average person me can find those places? Thanks in advance!
Jaycee, if you live near a large city, I would try any shopping areas or districts/neighborhoods that are close to a major design center. By "design center", I mean a center that caters to the trade only. Although you can't visit the center itself, you'll probably find many smaller, specialized retail shops in the surrounding areas.
If that doesn't work, I would probably ask around at local second-hand stores or antique shops. I'd also try any friends with specialized hobbies, e.g. sewing if you're looking for specialized fabrics, etc.
A few years ago, some city guidebooks were published, e.g. Where to shop in NYC? or Where to shop in ____(name of city)___? You might check to see if any current updates of those publications are available.
The smaller shops come and go, so you'll definitely want updated information. City or local online blogs might also contain information about specialty retailers in your area.
Happy shopping! All, JMHO.This message has been edited. Last edited by: blueday,
