I have a son graduating from high school and so we are invited to a large number of parties honoring his friends who are also graduating. In the past I have refrained from giving cash monetary gifts. Generally I purchased a set of bath sheet and wash cloths, hand towel for each graduate in their school colors. The parents have indicated that this was a nice gift for their son or daughter to have received. My son is having a fit that I will give towels again this year. Once I put together a gift bag of college dorm necessities as a grad gift - electric iron, dish towel & cloth, paring knife & small cutting board, etc. He doesn't like this either. I am looking for your suggestions and recommendations. Thanks in advance.
I understand your hesitation in giving money or gift cards, but as we all know, kids ALWAYS need money, they love it!! They don't get hooked up on the impersonalization like we do. My kids personally prefer money, they can "get what they want." But, another great gift I have always found, luggage! Especially for the ones going away to college, include a few netted laundry bags for that dirty laundry, you can pick them up for just a few bucks at the dollar store. Some luggage can get pricey, but for college kids, stick with the less pricey stuff, or even canvas duffels.

When my Mother was alive, she worked at a place that employed a lot of high school boys. They were all like her sons. When they would graduate, she would give them an Igloo. It was a smaller one that usually held 6 drinks. She always said it would be good for a 6 pack of cokes. My Mom always saw the good in everyone! I knew they would use it for a 6 pack of something eles! LOL Anyway, those boys would have a fit over that gift. They would say it was the best gift they had gotten.
If they're going on to college, I go to their online college bookstore and order either a T-shirt or sweatshirt, depending on cost. Never fails to please, and the boys always put them on right away. Or a gift card to their bookstore.
Perhaps you could give a gift card to the bookstore of the college/university that they will be attending. Text books are expensive. Any financial pressure that can be taken off of a new college student will surely be appreciated.
I like the campus book store gift card idea. Books are soooo pricey for college goers these days. Here are other ideas they're sure to appreciate:
gas cards (especially these days!) phone cards restaurant/eatery cards spa or salon gift card music store gift card electronic store gift card
BTW, don't feel bad mom. I once gave monogramed bath towels to a close friend's college bound DD. Personalization will ensure there's no mix up or disappearing towels.
