Hi Ladies - I would like to buy an American Girl doll for a niece but can't afford it. My solution is to either get a Target New Generation Doll or a Springfield Doll from Joann's. I'll be making a complete wardrobe for her also and this will be a Christmas gift. Has anyone had bad luck with either of these dolls? I was concerned about the hair. Thanks for any info.
I'm not on here much so sorry for the late reply. Last year our granddaughter wanted an American Doll. I think they are overpriced and would not buy one. Instead I got her 2 of the My Generation Dolls from Target. They come with accessories and a book just like the AD. She is 7 and knows they came from Target but doesn't care. She still likes them. I have seen the real American Dolls and they do not look any better than the ones from Target. Why pay more if there is not much difference?
We got my daughter several American Girl dolls when they first came out many years ago. We also bought some of the accessories and the books that went with each doll. My sister even used the patterns to make clothes for them, including a woolen coat in a color that my daughter wanted. They were very well made and withstood a lot of hair brushing, etc. That being said, I can understand the concern about price. The Target dolls are very similar looking. I don't know how well they will stand up to constant use, etc. American Girl also has a "doll hospital" and you can get dolls repaired. It all depends on how much you can afford to spend on a given product. It would also matter how much use or dare I say abuse a given doll will take? If the doll seems well made and is the right price then why not purchase it? I don't know if the patterns still exist for the American Girl clothes, but they were well worth the price.

I went ahead and bought the doll at Target. She is a pretty doll and seems to be well made. Her hair is very long and I think that could be a problem but they are all probably about the same. I have started making the clothes and am having a ball.
just to add I made clothes for my DGD Am.Girl doll and searched the internet for accesories. We even had a little Dutch girl with wooden shoes. I alsdo used the Am. girl patterns (which I sold on e-bay about 2 years ago) and several others. I always made a "test" outfit if I was using expensive material or doing a complex pattern that took alot of time...that said we had a fun time.
