I found if I shake them up to mix well and then refrigerate the bottles, (keeps the paint from running faster). Tip one over the other with the caps off, (when still cold) and simply tape (painters tape works well) to hold the openings together, the paint will transfer from the top bottle to the bottom as it warms up. Sometimes a tap or two before you take them apart will dislodge any stuck paint.
Before I have resorted to this, I have often simply squirted the paint from one to the other, if they have the flip top lids with the small holes? But you have already done this, I would imagine. If your current bottles do not have the flip top lids, perhaps some of your used bottles do and they would fit.
And forgot to mention, I have often resorted to poking a hole in the bottom of upside down bottle, to allow air in, and making a small hole in the tape area, to also allow the air bubble to escape, so the paint can move down.This message has been edited. Last edited by: conrad,
I have never transferred paint between containers. So this gives me pause to consider it. As a quilter, I know that dye-lots aren't the same. As my paint ages, I notice the separating components. So I always thought I couldn't mix the bottles. So thanks for sharing - this would definitely reduce the number of bottles on my shelf. BTW, my current painting project is a short wooden step ladder I painted white and am now freehand painting a stained glass design all over.
