Hi, this is my first post in these message boards and I hope to get some helpful info. My husband and I are buying a house that has what I think are oak cabinets but they have a bleached looking glaze over them. Parts of the glaze are worn so they'd need to be redone. The wood is in great condition though. My question is whether cabinets with this glaze can be sanded down and stained in a wood color. I wasn't sure if the bleached glaze would inhibit the effectiveness of the stain. Thanks for any and all info.

Sounds like the cabinets are "pickled". I would think by sanding, you'd remove whatever is there, and be able to restain or paint without any problem.

A pickled finish is done by wiping on a white paint before finishing, so the paint penetrates into the pores of the wood. I have refreshed such finishes. You might get lucky with wiping on a stain that will fill the pores over the white paint. Give it a shot on the inside of a lower door and see what happens.
