I watch spice up your kitchen weekly - With each new makeover, there is never a back splash on the countertop. I thought this was needed to stop water from going behind cabinets and rotting them... is this something new or are they really not needed?? Ordering and need some help !!

I'm not necessarily thinking it is cheap but maybe the style. They have done tiling as a backsplash. They would just have to caulk the seam that meets the countertop. I find the costs of these kitchens on this show especially high consiedering they have their people doing the work.

The standard 4" backsplash seems to have been engrained in our minds because of the preformed plastic laminate counters that dominated the market for decades. Designers have discovered the use of natural stone slabs and elegant backsplash materials. They have gotten away from the addition of the 4" backsplash because it adds an additional horizontal line to a room that is dominated by horizontal lines.
