Lately I have seen a lot of bathroom vanities that look like they have been made out of a dresser. Does anyone have the directions of how to do this? I was wondering just how difficult it is to do. I have a white porcelan sink that would look beautiful if it was set into a dark dresser but I don't know how hard it would be to change the drawers to make room for the plumbing. Has anyone done this before? How difficult was it? Do you like the results or does the plumbing take up too much storage space? I would love to hear your opinions.

Our home was built in 1900 and the only bathroom on the bedroom level has a sink attachted to the wall with plumbing coming down. Now don't get me wrong I LOVE the bathroom it's got the old tile and all but that sink left me no storage in the bathroom. Soo I too saw the dresser used as a vanity and got my DH on board to fix that up for us. He's not a handy dandy tool man but he did manage to get that dresser into a vanity for us and we've been at the home 5years and it's held up just great! DH just cut where he needed to so the dresser would fit up against the wall, luckily the structure of the dresser could stay intact since our pipes didn't go down to the floor they went into the wall just under the sink. Our house is currently up for sale so you can see our homemade vanity on craigslist

What a beautiful home! I love your tub too. It is adorable. Your husband did a terrific job on the vanity.

Thanks, this dresser we'd gotten at a auction for $15-20 can't recall just knew it was cheap so if it didn't work then we weren't out much. But I'm pleased with the results, I did just paint it but otherwise had it the natural wood and had tiled the top but once we decided to put the house on the market I removed the tile and painted it. Anyhoo, good luck if you do decide to do it, I think you'll enjoy having it!

THANK YOU! That is EXACTLY what I need! I found a sink at a yard sale last weekend for $5 lol. It is beautiful, white porcelin, and I think that it will work just great. I think that my mother might have a dresser that I can use. If not then I will keep looking at yard sales lol. I am very excited about this and I want to thank you for the directions. It looks like it goes together pretty much the way that I thought that it would but it always helps to have directions. I never would have thought to put plywood under the cutout and somehow I think that that is probably really important for support. Thanks again.

Ok, I have another problem. I think I found a dresser that would work perfectly but I think that it is too short. I would like for it to be higher than it is. Does anyone have any ideas of how to raise the height of the dresser? I don't think that I can replace the legs.

Nevermind that last request, I found out that the dresser will not work after all. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of dresser I should look for? Anything special?

I considered doing this, but ended up keeping the vanity that I had.

When I was looking, I searched for an antique buffet. Typically they have three sections across, the two ends are tall enough for the bottles that are normally stored under the sink, and the center section can be sacrificed for the drain. My problem was I couldn't find one the correct length.

You need to consider the plumbing under the sink. The pieces I found that were the length I needed were dressers, and after figuring out the storage I would have left after installing the sink and drain....well, it just didn't seem worth the effort to me.

That seems to be the problem that I am running into. I have a dresser that I can use, but it is too short and also not deep enough. I have started looking for things that are taller. Also, it does me no good to go to all of the trouble of converting something into a vanity and then ending up with very little or not storage space.
I bought a porceline sink at a yard sale for $5 and it is really neat looking, so I already have the sink. I figured that $5 was not too much to spend, even if I never got around to making the vanity. I figure that I have all summer to go to yard sales and flea markets and to look in the newspaper to see if I can find something that will work. I have the advantage that the top of the piece does NOT have to be terrific looking, given the fact that I am going to be cutting a hole in it anyway, so I might be able to find something relatively cheap lol. That is the plan anyway lol.
