We just had new cabinets installed and the 30 inch cabinet for the microwave that sits in between two 24 inch cabinets is the wrong depth. Is it possible to remove and replace a single cabinet in a wall of cabinets once installed? The guy that did the install is saying that all the cabinets would have to be replaced because once installed they are all linked and the integrity of the line of cabinets would be compromised. Thanks.

Standard wall cabinets are 12" deep. The MW cabinet will stick out a few inches. Where are you going to find a deeper wall cabinet?

It is possible to remove one cabinet. The cabinet is screwed to the wall through the hangrail inside the cabinet. It is screwed through the face frame on both sides to secure to the adjacent cabinets.

Thanks. We are either going to get the cabinet design person who messed up the order to get a deeper cabinet, or replace it with a regular 12X30 inch cabinet and go with an over the range microwave. The depth of the current cabinet is only 16.5 inches and the microwave we bought needs a depth of 23. That's really too deep for an upper cabinet. We have seen on line microwaves that would fit the width and height of the current space, but that only require about 20 inches depth for a cabinet.

I am trying to understand what our options are for when we talk to the person who placed (but messed up) the cabinet order. She might not fight us on replacing one cabinet but I can see a battle ahead if we have to replace the whole wall of cabinets.

Generally the replacement of a single wall-hung cabinet wouldn't be a major problem at all. I think your cabinet guy is blowing smoke. Even if for some reason all the cabinets would have to be taken down (which they shouldn't) you still wouldn't have to replace all the cabinets, that's just plain stupid.Smile

The cabinets are fastened to the back wall and they should be ganged in two places per side through the front stiles. Remove about six screws and pull that sucker out of there. If there's any crown molding then that's a different issue but doesn't change anything.Smile

Bud,
Thanks. I did not understand why all the cabinets would need to be replaced either. There is no crown molding to worry about so that is good.

Not I just need to get the cabinet lady who messed up the order to do the right thing and pay for a new cabinet!

Did you provide the Microwave's specs to the designer prior to her ordering the kitchen?
What about returning the microwave?

Your carpenter may be at least partly right, generally, you have to start at the open end and work backwards taking down cabinets to get to the one in question. And then if you merely pull it forward to accomodate the increased depth the stiles will reflect the original installation.
