I am the administrator of my aunt's estate. I know someone has been inside to shut off the water - not just from the inside - it's been turned off from the exterior valve and all water drained from the fixtures. I am concerned, however, with sewer gas coming up through the empty pipes. Should this be a concern, or am I over-stressing about it? If not, what can be done?
I think it can kind of depend on how long the house remains vacant with the water shut off?
There are safe anti-freeze additives you can add to traps (toilets, sinks, floor drains, showers, tubs, etc) that are sold at camper supply stores. And closing off and taping shut (duct tape) any drains would be an easy fix too.
