We just bought a new house that comes with an older model side by side Kitchen Aid refrigerator(I'm guessing maybe it's around 10 years old?). We have a newer Whirlpool side by side that we're taking with us to the new house. We want to take the older Kitchen Aid and move that to the garage and put our newer Whirlpool in the kitchen at the new house.

Obviously with the Kitchen Aid, since it's going on a moving truck from one house to the other, we are going to take everything out and clean it to prep for the move. My question is, with the older Kitchen Aid--since it's just going from the kitchen to the garage(a move of about 50-60 feet) does it need to be shut off 24 hours prior to the move and cleaned out, etc?

    Thanks!

i don't get why you would have to shut it off 24 hrs before moving...but emptying it out will make it easier to move.....

I have heard that it needs to be shut off for 24 hrs for the cooling "stuff" to settle and recycle, but with such a short move - that's like having a power outage so - I don't think I would wait - just be sure to keep it upright at all times while moving it. We used a piece of wood to go out the door like a ramp - worked well.

No need to shut off the fridge before moving BUT you want it to settle in place for at least a few hours AFTER the move. That allows the oil in the refrigerant to settle back to where it belongs.

You don't say where you are located, refrigerators don't like being in freezing conditions. If you are located in a cold climate the fridge may not work well in the garage.

If you don't lay the fridge down in the process of moving it you can power it up fairly quickly after placing it in its new location.

Hmmm...I live in Colorado. So it definitely gets cold out in the garage. The garage walls are insulated...a little. But it will still get pretty dang cold in there. I never thought about that.

    Thanks for all the responses.

Keep in mind this was about 50 years ago and I know technology has changed. My neighbor had a fire in their garage started by a refrigerator. This was in southern Maine.
