I live in zone 4 and this year we are finding an abundance of "common mullen" in our yard! I believe this is what it's called and I'm hoping some of you might have pics or info on how to get rid of it. Please help!!!!

I would dig it up. If you have lots of small ones, you could spray herbicide on them, but personally I prefer the manual methods when possible.

Mullen is a biennial, so it grows leaves the first year, blooms the second year, sets seed and then dies, so the best way to control it is to pull it out before it sets seed. I actually like how it looks, so I let mine bloom and pull them out before they set seed...so far that has been enough to keep them in check and they have not spread to my formal garden areas.
Also, the seeds need light to germinate, so if you use a thick layer of mulch, that will also help. The bad news is that seeds can remain viable for 20+ years, so every time the soil gets stirred up and light gets to the seeds, they will sprout, but if you keep after them, they shouldn't take over. Common mullein can be controlled by manually removing or with broadleaf weedkiller.
Even though goats won't eat mullein, some cultivate mullein as a deer deterrent and for the beauty of its soft leaves. |
