Jlitz, if I read your message right, you planted Marathon Grass 6 years ago and now for some reason your lawn is Bermuda Grass.

Both types of grasses are well-known, well respected southern grass types.
Somehow your lawn was taken over by the one, shutting out the other.

Now you wish to remove the grass. WHY?

There are sprays you can use to pretty well kill anything...including a grass that is prevalent throughout the south.

If its your wish to have the Marathon type back, then why not just plan on overseeding this type--try to push out the Bermuda.
Seems to me, having both types well established in your lawn might prove beneficial.
One doesn't need the care of the other...uses a lot less water and is very low maintenance.
The other, kind of opposite--it has maintenance needs but not to the extent one would tire of what has to be done.

Before anyone advises you to kill what might well be a good tough grass, I think you should inform us here....why you wish to kill one of the grasses....what is it about one of them that bothers you?

I think the Marathon out here is sod...so likely the bermuda grass is starting to take over in the lawn...

the bermunda is spreading to the beds. I do not have boarders and it it is now in ornamental grasess which I'll be spend the weekend pulling out. I like the look of Marathon better than the bermunda Which I think looks like a weed.

You'll just be pulling the stuff forever. Bermuda is probably going to outlive us all.

Well, there you go, I know from nothing about either but in reading about them, it would seem to someone who doesn't have them, both seem to be widespread in use in southern lawns.

Sounds like Bermuda is something like clover...once it gets a foothold, it spreads shutting out any that competes.

I think bermuda grass was discussed a few months ago on this board. I had heard it was quite a durable grass and had considered planting it in front where kids/dogs play and park bikes, etc. It was discussed with not to many good things to say about it, researched it myself and it sounds like it is extremely durable alright, evasive and nearly impossible to controll, If I remember right "round up" was suggested and digging up lawns, The root systems can be something like 10-20 ft. It grows in extremely dry hot areas such as the plains of Africa where nothing else will grow.
