Help......we have stones all the way around our house instead of mulch. Underneath is a weed barrier, but weeds are popping up through this barrier. Is there an easier way to keep the weeds from reappearing other than pulling them? Can't really use pesticides as we have 3 dogs.
Are you sure the "weeds" are growing through the "weed" barrier? Often, over a few years dust from the air and other types of organic matter accumulate in the stones and that provides a rooting medium for many plants (I have some Columbine and Forget Me Nots that have decided to grow in my Lava Rock this year). The most coreect way to solve this problem is to remove the stone, wash it to remove the accumulated soil, adn then replace the stone. That wil also give you a good chance to inspect this "weed" barrier to be sure it is still hole free, and if necessary replace it. There is no really easy way to do this properly.

Crazy, I think you'll find that those weeds that might have come about from seeds that were air borne and dropped in on your garden and found sufficient matter to germinate in have very short roots and are easily pulled out by hand. That's usually the case when weeds make it up through mulch--they haven't had the sunlight needed to give them strength and are spindly because of it. Even those deep tap-rooted dandelions are able to be pulled out with not so much trouble. Just be sure though, in the dandelions case, to get all the roots, otherwise they'll just re-appear--even as weak as they might be.
Weeds appearing in gravel or stone mulch is one of the cons of using this type of mulch. Weeds can be sprayed with herbicide (not pesticide), taking care not to let the herbicide drift onto desirable plants and grass. There are foam herbicides available which tend to minimize any drift if used when there is no breeze. The herbicide dries quickly and should pose no harm to pets. As a precaution, pets can be placed where safe until the herbicide dries.
