You will get dragonflies, frogs, toads(in the spring), mosquitoes(but frogs & toads will keep them in check), birds of all kinds & many other friendly creatures of nature. The frogs will not stay around you when you get around the pond so you shouldn't have to worry about them.

Yes it is possible to get snakes, but they will be like the frogs, they are actually beneficial to the pond & you will not see them most of the time. I have 4 bullfrogs & at least 1 small snake at my pond & don't ever see the snake but once. I didn't do any thing with it because it eats all the little insects like crickets, spiders & grasshoppers that come to the pond. Do you live in the country or city?

Roll EyesI live in West Palm Beach; I can said a country, I come from NY and the nature here is so perfect that i am enchanted but....
not frogs or snakes, my husband bought something that supposly scare snakes away before I start working in the pond, I wish that really works. I dream to have a pond; My back yard was just grass all over and I am making a paradise according to me. I will keep post to send pics before and after.

Roll EyesExcuse me... my dog will be all over that pond if that is the case because she is a predactor when it comes to anything in her territory (she went to school and is very well trained) oops....I will pray before I start so my dream come true and live happy in my little paradise.

    Mary,
Keep in mind while you're out buying koi, that the suggested stocking ratio is 250 gals. per koi. Not sure how large your pond is, but goldfish may be a better choice for your pond. Smile

    Mary BZ-
We have Gold Fish in our pond, and they are great! They've had babies over the years and all and we've just had a wonderful time with them, so if you can't have KOI then by all means get some Gold Fish!

I agree if your pond isn't big enough you might think about getting Shubukan gold fish they look like koi but will only grow to the size of the container they are in.
