I have been renovating a house for a couple months now and finally am living there. Its a great place, but now I'm trying to get my landscaping under control. According to my neighbors the old owner had splotchy St. Augustine grass and just threw out 2 or 3 different kinds of other grass seed to get coverage. Now I would like to get the St. Augustine to take over. I have it coming back and looking good in areas, but I'm not sure how or if I can get the other species of grass to go away!
I was thinking of tilling up spots in teh other grass and plant plugs, but will that take over the rest of the other grass or do I have to till the entire areas for it to take over?
From my experience I would say that if you till the spots and don't cut your St. Augustine to low (say cut at about 3") it should take over the empty spots. If it doesn't I would stick plugs in those areas.
One thing I've found about St. Augustine is that if there is a place you don't want it to put runners out, it will!!
I agree with them both. I have St. Augustine and it is a slow grower and loves water. I'd put in plugs, raise the mower blade to 2-3inches and I use Vigaro Ultra Turf for St. Augustine. Then water, water, water. Also have patience, it will take awhile but it is a really pretty grass. Hope this helps.
The hurrieder I go the behinder I get
