Hi. I wasn't out looking for this shrub, but i have seen it around other landscapes and like how it looks. From how i see it, it gives off a tropical looking foliage. It's a 15 gallon container and is masively tall. At least 14 feet. I got it at home depot for 79.99... It seemed like a good deal considering when i pass by it at local nursery's they go for 149 and over, also greatly smaller. Does this type of magnolia need any pruning? After it blooms? Or in the fall? Or leave it alone and let it grow on its own!!? Any comments would be helpful, thanks!

Make sure you plant this baby where it has lots of room to grow. It can reach 50'. Spread is 25-30'. Needs full sun. Can handle a little shade. Pruning is not necessary, but straggly branches can be pruned to keep appearance tidy. Prized for its shiny leaves with cinnamon-colored undersides.

now, as far as pruning?....very little, please... magnolias don't heal well.... pruning leaves the tree open to disease and pest.... it grows naturally pyramid-shaped, so needs no shaping... and if you're a smart man, you'll not take off the bottom limbs ... you don't NEED to mow or walk under this tree, ever... and if you do, you'll be raking under it constantly....let the lower branches hide all the stuff that falls from this tree....

if you read the links I gave you, you'll see that this tree blooms less often than most... so don't think there's anything wrong with it if it only gets a few flowers.....but watch out for those crazy women who will try to steal your leaves for their xmas wreaths and decor....!!!... offer them those that have fallen and keep them away from the live ones!!!!... *smile*.........

    great tree... good choice....

Hey Toots. Nice to see you again. I remember you from a few posts I did a while back. I thought it was a nice tree too. It was really big and cheap for it's size. And something i wouldn't expect to see at HD. I have it growing in a flower bed off my deck, so i won't have a problem with mowing under it anyway!

I should probably start a new topic, but since this one's already open! I have a different type of magnolia in the front yard. I got it 2 years ago. It doesn't have the glossy dark green leaves. Just standard big leaves? I forgot the name of it, maybe I'll look around Google and try to find it.. Here's the question. When i bought it the tree had very large leaves. This year and last, the leaves opened up MUCH smaller then when i had first bought it? Is it growing in bad dirt, or missing certain nutrients that i should be applying? Or could it be that when i bought it was growing in a green house causing its big leaves?
