OK, crazy idea, but it might work. The neighbor and us would like privacy between our 2 houses. We currently have a 5'6" tall wrought iron fence -- just plain, vertical spindles -- nothing fancy. We were told that we could attach 2X4s to the upper and lower horizontal posts or the iron fence and screw wood fencing into it, using the in-ground wrought iron posts. We're told the in ground iron posts are fine and the fence is sturdy. Does this sound do-able? It sure is less expensive than a new wood fence!

Sorry to say this ,Susan, but what you are proposing sounds like it would end up being really................ugly.

If privacy is what you need, why not look into various kinds of screening shrubs and trees that could be used in conjunction with your wrought iron fence?

Sounds do-able to me & I've been around construction of some sort most of my life. Is the neighbor going to attach fence panels to their side also? If not it might not be to attractive on their side if you face the panels to your side.

Thanks for the responses. Our neighbor doesn't care that his side will show iron with wood fence behind it. From our side we'll just be seeing the wood (cut flush with the top of the iron fence).
