I would love to add some brick (stone veneer) to the bottom of our home (just runs across the bottom level of a split level and not around the garage) - a rather small area. Is doing something like this really expensive?

The cost of cultured or veener stone is in the neighborhood of $4-6 sq ft. You will have about $3-4 sq ft installation on top unless you tackle it yourself.

A friend bricked their entire house post initial construction about 8 years ago, it was a two story 2500 square foot house + garage with a brick front. They bricked everything that wasn't bricked and it ran about $40K. You don't say where you are, it will make a difference. The depth of the foundation/footers varies depending on the frost line in your area. A thin brick veneer can be applied without going all the way to a footer. It is applied over a plywood/OSB sub base like stucco. This would give you the look of brick without the major renovation involved in digging down to the footer and installing a concrete (cinder) block base up to grade to rest your bricks upon.

Location makes a big difference as was mentioned above. In my area, I see people adding stone veneer. I would go to a store that sells various products and see if someone can come out and give you a quote. One of my local tile stores also does brick work and offers this service through various contractors. They have lots of different products with various price points. We are looking at changing a fireplace in our family room and we didn't have any idea that there are lots of options out there.
