I need a new garage door and opener and hope to get some advice here. Some doors say they are insulated and others are not. Is that important for just a garage? And for the opener, I’m leaning towards Chamberlain or Genie. What do you folks think of these? Would you recommend one over the other? What is the difference between a belt drive and chain drive opener? Is one better than the other? Is ½ HP good enough for a one car garage? TIA.

I opted for an insulated door with foam insulation between two layers of steel. They are more durable and are quieter than uninsulated doors.

I'd opt for a belt or screw drive over a chain drive. My neighbors and I have all replaced our Liftmaster openers after 6-8 years because the gears inside the opener stripped out. I went with a Genie direct drive screw opener as have most of my neighbors.

Sparky - Thanks for your input. I hadn't thought about an insulated door being quieter.

One other benefit, if the door gets dented from behind, it won't show on the outside. Dents on the outside however will be visible to the world. Kind of like the double wall beds in pickup trucks verses the early import trucks with single wall beds, that created the market for bed liners.

Don't get a Genie had two they don't last. I replaced with the Liftmaster also it was professionally installed and also have the belt or screw drive. We had the chain for years everyone knew when we were home from the rattle the door made when it opened.

Because our garage doors catch the west sun .. we went with insulated.. it makes a big difference on those 100+ days.. read about the different types.. we've got 3 screw drives.. been very pleased.. smooth & quiet...

Compare warranties...

We have a genie, and it's held up very well so far, it's about 5 yrs old or so. Before that we had a sears brand, we went with a genie because the chain broke on the sears, we were in the house at the time, could have been very dangerous.

No more chains for us.
