What is the best type of paint to use on an exterior fiberglass door? It faces west, so gets full afternoon sun and is also exposed to the elements (no storm door). We have previously stained it but with the exposure to the elements staining doesn't last long. We're hoping paint will be more durable.

I've used Latex semi-gloss enamel on mine. Staining didn't work well for me either, the stain is fine but polyurethane doesn't hold to the fiberglass. Sikkens makes a product that will work with fiberglass, at least according to the tech specialist I talked with several years ago but I've never tried it.

My front door is currently painted with Sherwin Williams Duration latex semi-gloss in a fairly bright red on a west facing door with a storm door and it looks fine after 3 years.

I don't think a gloss would work well with the wood grain pattern in the fiberglass door.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't found the employees at our local paint departments / stores very knowledgeable, so I didn't want to rely solely on their recommendations.

Have you visited a pro paint store, and not just a "paint department" in another store? Most of the time the difference in knowledge and good advice can be a very different quality between the two? Not to say all "paint departments" have minimally trained staff, but going to a paint store increases your chances of having a person who is actually trained and knows their products.
