Our guest room is about 12'x13'. The ceiling is 11 or 12' high. The sides slope up starting at the 8' point, but don't ever come to a point--the ceiling is flat at the top. The room is upstairs and we want to use a ceiling fan to conserve energy.

The furniture is French Provincial by Drexel Heritage from the early 50's. It's white with gold trim and hardware. The adjoining bathroom has Kohler's Vibrant Brushed Bronze finish on the faucets, etc. Where can I find a ceiling fan that will go well in this bedroom??? I'm not even sure what to look for. I do know it will have to have a downrod because of the height of the ceiling.

Any suggestions? I wanted a lovely chandelier/chandelette, but DH wants to be practical.

Tammy, if it is a guest room will it be used very often? (in other words is it a guest room/office or sewing room or something...or is it only in use when there is company?) I guess the 2nd question would be how often do you have guests?

I too would visualize a chandelier in such a room as you have described, not a ceiling fan. We have a couple of them too, one in the kitchen & one in the family room...I wish the one in the kitchen was GONE but DH thinks we "need" it. I say..."for WHAT?" LOL.

Is your DH ever open to compromise? Because I think that's where I'd try to go in this instance! I don't personally think that in the scheme of things they save all that much energy but that is probably not a good argument to use w/ your DH...

I think I can picture your furniture because the description sounds like a room in my parents' house. My mother got the furniture in the early 60's. They, at the insistence of my dad, put ceiling fans in ALL their bedrooms...and imo, the fan in their house w/ the white/gold furniture just doesn't "get it" for me. On top of that no one in our family likes to sleep under them...too "breezy" even on low.

What is it with these guys & those fans!

    PeriParker-
My thoughts exactly. I think I'd rather keep a small portable fan in the closet for the guest who gets too hot. I just can't imagine finding a ceiling fan that would look right in that room. At least not one that we could afford.

The room is strictly a guest room. We have 4 grown kids, 3 of which live out of town and 7 grandkids, so we hope to use it frequently.

DH is pretty much "do what you want" about everything, especially the decor. That's why I let him put ourhis breaker boxes on the wall where the electricity came into the house rather than running it to the center of the house. I did want to make a stab at looking for a fan, but I can't even imagine what it would be. Maybe someone will surprise me.

Thank you so much. The good news is I actually found one that would work and be lovely. The bad news is that the first one I found was over $700. I persevered and found a nice one for under $200.fan for guest room

I think I may really like the contrast of the dark in that room. I can always antique the blades if they are too dark.

I love that Minka fan and that tuscany finish will look wonderful in the room you described. Not to complicate your decision further but they do have chandelier style lamp kits for fans. That might be over the top though.

    colophobic,

Yes, I saw some of the chandelier light kits. But I am satisfied with what I found and the price was right. They also had another ceiling fan like the one I found but without the kit kit--I found a really nice light kit that I liked, similar but with fancy glass. But that combination was about $400--I don't want to spend that much.

I think what I found will be fine. Will look nice but not especially call attention to itself and will provide the function it is intended for. I was really afraid I was going to have to keep a fan in the closet for the hotties, but it would have killed me to have to get it out and it definitely wouldn't have matched the decor Frown

Thanks. What a great site. Lots of unusual fans. I found one that I like almost as much the Minka one I found, and I did find some possibilities for another room. Haven't checked pricing yet.

I was intrigued by their new fan called Air Shadow, in which the blades retract when not in use. That one also had a fabric shade which I thought was nice and different.

Just checked the price on the Fanimation Air Shadow with the fabric shade. Too pricey for our guest room at $808. It would be really nice for someone who wouldn't mind the price.
