I'm finally going to get some wood floors...YAY! It's going to go in the living, dining and kitchen area. My question is: how was it installed? Did you glue or float them? We can't nail because it's concrete underneath. There are pro/cons to both. If we glue, we'll have to deal with the smell, more messy, etc. But if we float, even with padding...it might produce hollow sounds. The material is going to be engineered wood. This message has been edited. Last edited by: applejam,

If properly installed, you're going to love your new hardwood flooring. Tho DH and I have installed real hardwood flooring in our home over the years, it's never been on concrete. I did a quick google and found this informative site that offers loads of important tips from acclimating the new flooring to instillation options (including illustrations). Even if you're hiring out professional installers, it's vital that you do your homework to ensure proper instillation. Hope this helps: http://www.woodweb.com/knowled...Hardwood_Floors.html

Mine are floating and I love them. I know you will too!! Just make sure the installer has experience. Annie

Thanks Froo Froo! The link was very informative and helpful. We are going to pay for installation since we are novices but you're right, it certainly helps to come prepared with knowledge so we know the right questions to ask and make sure they are doing it properly. Annie - Do you hear any hollow sounds when walking on them? Did you do upgraded padding? It is a much easier installation method and less costly, so it's great hearing good things about it.

One thing I will add regarding wood and if you go with glue down...when getting estimates verify if the glue is included in the cost or on top of. I know when I was getting prices on wood and a laminate floor, that was one difference I found between floor shops.
|
Thanks Always! I have someone coming out today for an estimate...can't wait!!

Good luck! I'll be keeping an eye out on your post as we have decided to do wood floors as well. j

My installation was finally completed yesterday. We lost a week due to the storm so half was done last Monday and then the power went out! It was $4800. for just over 800 square feet with the tax included, and it was worth every penny. 3/4 inch solid oak in a dark fruitwood tone called antique gunstock. Now I can't wait to redo the kitchen, so I can have the wood flooring carried through.

DH and I are trying to make a decision on wood flooring in his mother's home. I've pretty much decide to go with the solid oak GUNSTOCK OAK flooring made by Bruce. Is this what you have Charles D? Could you share a picture? No hollow sounds when you walk across it?
|
Hi G.P., haven't taken any pics yet, I'll try. We live in a condo with neighbors below. The 3/4 inch solid oak seems to be absorbing a lot of noise. The previous owners had put in ceramic tile and laminate. The difference in the feel underfoot and the echo is remarkable. WE went with Mullican because of the price, the wood was $2.98 per sq. ft. and the installation in N.J. is $2.50 per sq. ft. It was the least expensise solid wood flooring option from Lowe's, but it looks very rich. I'm not sure about the gunstock color, what we have is antique gunstock and it is more of a cherry tone, than a golden oak tone.

Charles, thank you so much!! This is what I needed to hear! DH doesn't want it to sound like the laminate flooring which we had installed in another house. It has since been replaced with ceramic tile which he loves because it's a good solid floor. He wanted to go with ceramic but his mama has dug her heels in and wants to go with the wood. I made the mistake of siding with her and now I'm the one having to assist her with all the decisions ETA..Was your floor nailed down or glued? Applejam, have you made a decision yet? JustJosie, have you? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Georgia Peach,

Hi everyone! My wood floors are finally done! Here are some pics...what do you guys think? Suggestions?

Hmmm...I don't remember how to post pics because it's been a while. It says the file is too large. Help!
|
Put the photos into your computer photo storage site. From there export them to the desktop, but in doing so reduce the dimensions to 400 (for the largest view) that should work.

Thank you! Let me try the 1st pic ![]()
