My husband had a silly idea about framing the windows in out family room with a fabric covered frame. At least I think that's the right terminology. I'm talking about how people place a frame, usually white, around the window, usually with a ledge on the bottom. My husband thought it would be cool and different to do that, but instead of just painting the frame, wrap it in fabric. Has anyone ever seen this before and has it looked even remotely nice? We searched the internet for picturs or anything else on it but can;t find anything. Please help!
I love to experiment, and create new things, and so I would never tell you not to try your idea.
On the other hand, the "wood around the window and the ledge at the bottom" are part of the window framing, and how the window is constructed and installed. I can't quite get my head around how you would go about installing your idea. And how you could make it durable and practical.
Maybe you could research "upholstered cornice" and that could give you some ideas on how to make something like you describe that could be added to a window after the window is installed. There is no reason why you couldn't build a cornice type piece that could frame the entire window.
This type of treatment is called a Lambrequin, here are some photos. they usually do not have a bottom because the window usually has a sill and is necessary not to put fabric there due to water and soil might enter the window when open (rain, etc.).
Hi Shelle...if your husband is talking about having all the window trim covered in fabric I would try putting it on with liquid starch. I've seen it used instead of wallpaper in a rental where the tenant couldn't do anything permanent so it might work for your trim as well.. The starch will hold it on until you decide that you hate it or decide in the future you want to go back to paint or stain. The fabric is easily removed by spraying with some water. I would make sure any trim is sealed tho before trying this or all the moisture will soak into the wood... and that would not be a good thing.
