I recently installed Bianco Ramano granite and it clashes horribly with my slightly white washed oak cabinets. Any paint color suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Would like to go off-white.

The only thing I would suggest to try first is to go to a store (Lowe's, Home Depot, or a paint store like Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams) and bring home a pamphlet of their 'whites'. This way you can place it right on the counter and see how that granite in your light and in your kitchen effects the colors on those samples.

When you see a color you like, you can get a sample of it mixed up (for under $5) and try it out on a patch in your kitchen. At least you will have a place to start.

Thank you Mary Ruth. I will do just that! When I realized what color I would need to go, I was immediately intimidated by the idea of having to choose a white.

my2gals,
You are not alone! There are hundreds of tints and shades of white!
By putting one in front of the granite in your light it will show you the undertones that will become more obvious as to which one NOT to use!

It is so much easier to eliminate the ones that do not work.

When you do find the right white or close to it, if it is a bit darker than you want, you can have a gallon sized mixed at 75% of the tint added. I do this when I find the white is just a bit too 'colorful' for the room, like the gray being a tad too dark once dried.

I ask the guy/gal mixing the paint what is in the formula so I can see if there are any blues, greens or red in the undertones.

YES picking a white is sometimes a hair-pulling experience (it seems), but a systematic elimination process and finding the right intensity makes it less emotional.

Also try your sample horizontal on your counter to see the match. Colors look different on the wall (vertical) than they do on a horizontal surface.

Good luck and I would like to see which one you pick, perhaps posting a photo for us to see how it looks with the granite!

It just 'sounds' complicated, but once you have a plan of attack (way to choose) it will be faster and easier to zone in on the right ones.

Thank you so much! These are things I would have never thought of. I will have to rely on the professionals, as I have a horrible time distinguishing undertones. Choosing granite was difficult enough but this paint thing really has me dreading making a choice. You have made it seem less intimidating for sure though. I will certainly post pics when I get it figured out. I'm really getting a push back from family and friends for painting my oak cabinets in the first place. I just don't know of another option.

I used the color "Garlic Clove" from Lowes' Valspar Paintline (I think that line) I took the paint swatch to Benjamine Moore and had it tinted there. I used their new paint that is 70% oil but water wash up. If you need more details, I can dig through my notes to give you exact information. You can see my kitchen on the link below.

Great! Thank you!
Picked up a color deck (?) from Sherwin Williams and thought I would look over them then return for samples as suggested.

My favorite off white is Benjamin Moores OW 30 (that is the old name but they will know what you mean from that name)

I have used this extensively in my home.

Thank you. I will look that one up! I am dragging my feet a bit after being told my preferred painter is booked through early January.

Being the impatient person that I am, rather than wait for a professional I chose to stain the cabinetry myself. While I was dreaming of the pristine white kitchen (even though I was told more than once that "white kitchens are just a trend right now")...???? That's another subject.

Anyways, thank you for the help and encouragement. While the dark stain is not really the look I was going for, I will admit it fits the style of my home very nicely. I will post pics once it is complete. Soooo close!
