Is there a rule of thumb or trend that is followed. We are painting kitchen, hallway, living room and guest bath the same color...all flow with each other. all receive a lot of natural light. What would be the sheen of choice. SW paints pro man 200.

The more reflective a surface is the more imperfections are highlighted. Now that matte paint has been formulated to be washable the trend is definitely towards flat paints like Aura or B.M. Bath & Spa. Since tile, granite and appliances have some kind of sheen, flat walls are a nice contrast.

Good to know. What do most use in their home?

Charles D, that's a very good thing to hear (especially from a pro). Flat walls have always been my choice, and any time I tried to deviate (to follow the herd) I ended up painting over it. I just do NOT like the way a sheen highlights imperfections, as you mentioned, and I just find a matte finish classier. I'm glad it's coming back.

peppyun - I would guess by my participation in this board that most use a satin or eggshell.

These days they make a good washable flat-ish paint. I always ask if washable and then go with lowest sheen for walls.
Semi gloss for trim. Flat or ceiling paint for ceilings with no sheen unless ceiling is flawless then a high sheen will add a height and dramatic feeling to the room.

I have been told that paint with a flat finish touches up better without showing than reflective finishes.

I wish I could coat my life in semi gloss! ..haha

Does sheen effect the way the color appears..such as does satin look lighter and flat darker?

Usually true, but the quality of the paint is a factor also.Less expensive paint fades faster, so it depends on when you do your touch up. Awesome coverage and touch up with Muralo. I know B.M. is the big favorite but I'm really liking Muralo if you're not going to spend on Farrow and Ball or Stark.

Most people do like eggshell because it has always been more cleanable, but that's changed in tha past few years.

Hi Peppy,

I have always used flat finish for painting walls. Trim is always semi-gloss.

Good Luck!

Guy at SW told me flat paint will appear lighter.

Higher sheen does indeed impact the color as it will typically appear darker. That is why most manufacturers provide a sheen guide showing how color shifts as gloss changes. If you are going with SW and want to use a lower sheen, you should ask for better quality than PM200 - it is their commercial line and will not perform well in any sheen, especially a low sheen product. Trade up to Duration.
