i'm neew to the boards and i need help with my breakfast area. i saw a painting i really like but not sure it is appropriate for the wall size. my wall is 71" long/ 8Ft. ceilings, it's behind my breakfast table facing my family room. the painting is 39"x39". is this too large for this size wall? i wish i new how to post pic. of each. please use your imagination and help me please. my color scheme is red/yellow/sage. the painting is red/ yellow.
To me, it sounds like a large painting would make a terrific statement on that wall. A good way to check is to tape up (use painter's tape) copy paper or wrapping paper that approximates the size and shape on the wall in question. Then, you'll have a good idea if you like the placement or not.
Be sure not to hang it too high. It should be comfortable to view it standing or sitting. And remember, your house is not an art gallery, so it is not necessary to see every inch of the painting from every angle.
Thanks everyone. I really like all the ideas especially the template. The large paintings look nice to me. I don't live too close to the store, thats why i'm asking questions before i purcahse it. I had a smaller painting on the wall, but i had to put a scounce on both sides to make it look fuller. i'm not sure of the height. should i make the center of the painting eye level. (65 in from floor)? i'm 5'9" tall. I really do thank you all for your help.
I have a bold abstract paint with lots of reds on the wall in my family room along the side of the stairs. It is about 4ft by 6 ft. Absolutely fabulous. Such a statement. I prefer larger pieces to small peices. I tend to buy the largest piece a space can take. Tape some paper to size and get a sense of how the size will fit. Note though that that will not be so helpful in heling you determine "presence". If the painting is very bold you have to factor that in. You'll have a good 2 feet on either side. My gut feeling is that it will be just fine. Be bold! Take a chance! You'll love it
I purchased the painting, got it home after traveling almost 2 hrs. to the store. The reds were so off with my other assesories. I really tried to make it work but it just didn't blend . Beautifu painting, but i'll have to take it back. Thanks for all your help. i know reds usually blend well but this was somehow more of an orange than red.
Before you return it here is a thought ... if you truly love the painting, look around the house to see if there is anywhere else that it will work. This might sound weird to you but my art sort of speaks to me and tell me where they should be placed. That said, I don't buy art just for decoration. I have to feel some kind of connection to the piece etc etc ... but that's just me If you have tried that and you are not happy then remove the source of unhappiness from your space. Art is supposed to make you feel happy.
If you could go to a home goods store like Home Depot or Lowe's. Then pick a few reds from the paint samples. Bring them home and hold them up in your house to see if you can 'match' the red you are looking for. This will help you to narrow down the color.
Some reds have blue undertones and look like blood red, other reds have more yellow in them to make them more on the orange side. So, with a paint sample you can take with you anywhere, you can have something to match future fabrics and accessories to for when you want to spread the color around your home.
Good luck with your project and I hope we get to see photos when you have it arranged.

I like it! Looks to me as if there are various tones of red in the painting and it looks good with your color scheme - altho I've never thought art has to match anything.

I also like the first picture. If you think it might need more on the wall perhaps you could get some decorative molding to place a few inches out around the art work and try to match the molding paint to the picture. What do you think?

I agree, if the rest of the house is 'calm' then go for #2. But if Vibrant is what you want and you can use pops of bright colors in other rooms then #1
Good choices!

I LOVE the first painting! Not only the colors but the subject just speaks to my love of all things floral! Nice. The first picture adds such personality to the space! It says WOW!
The first one makes a statement, the second is 'little old lady' art and that's the opinion of 'a little old lady'. LOL Altho I'd not put the second in my house but would put the first. My apologies to anyone who prefers the second but IMO it's bland, lacks personality, and looks less expensive.
ETA - I'd never frame the first painting - it would reduce it's impact. This message has been edited. Last edited by: joyluck,

I really like the first one as it gives your room a nice pop of color while the second one seems to wash out. I also like how the first one has a touch of gold which ties in with your chandelier!
There's something about oversized art that makes a real presence in a room that I love. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Sunny Daze,

Sunny Daze, An oversized piece of art is not really oversized, it is more human scale. I like to see things and landscapes in the size we would view them in real life. When you go to the museums you see how most paintings were done this way, very large.
Of course if you have a castle you can hang all huge art and it fits right in, I understand that the scale of modern homes is not such as to allow room for all this art that is huge.
BUT, we could enjoy one or two large scaled prints or murals in the right place that will fill a space with content that moves us or inspires us. Color in a large painting is such a clever way to live with a particular color or two without painting the whole room.
I love this mural by Ali Kay, the scale is wonderful and the colors just make the space come to life.
