Has pinterest replaced blogs as your "go to place" for decor ideas? I read a blog post yesterday indicating that pinterest has forced bloggers to spend more time writing interesting posts vs posting alot of pics.

In most cases I am more interested in pics than in the text but I don't use pinterest that much.

How about you?

I find following blogs to be time consuming. I have subscribed to a few and I usually delete the Email unread. Pinterest has too much repetition, is difficult to navigate to find the origin of an item of interest, and has too much posted that is completely unavailable.

I like the Houzz digest that gets Emailed to me twice per week. I can scan through the topics quickly and spend more time on any that interest me. However, I hate Houzz's search function as it is almost impossible to narrow a search to the specifics you really want to see. Also, I think the posting activity on Houzz must have decreased significantly because I'm not seeing a lot of new pictures in my area of interest.

Okay, so everything I've said is negative...sorry. I still like decor magazines although I mostly have digital subscriptions these days.

I put all my blogs on google reader. I just check it everyday and delete the ones that don't interest me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds pinterest repetitive.

Haven't had great luck with Houzz either.

Im not really interested in Pinterst. Just can't get into it. I like blogs betters. But don't even read those much anymore.
I like this place better, but wish it would pick up.
I read at Garden web a lot too.

I tried Google reader and couldn't get the hang of signing into it every day. That is how it works, isn't it?

Gracie, I just bookmared it like I do with this page so I am always signed in and can just pop in.

That makes sense, Annie17. Maybe I'll try that method again.

I've never gotten into blogs...I look at Pinterest hit or miss...there IS a lot of great inspiration on there, but it can definitely be overwhelming. I've never checked Houzz, maybe I should.

I go to them all but not real often. I particularly like a blog called "Under the Table and Dreaming". I also like "Home Talk".

I do enjoy wasting time on pinterest .
Its a nice resource and a convenient place to save inspirational pictures and recipes.
I also have some go-to blogs that I enjoy reading daily, I don't subscribe, I just have them bookmarked.

I did get into a few and what I have learned is
with the exception of YHL which is clearly run as a home business, the majority post when life permits. I've also noticed more ads and less content which sent me to google reader.

AnnieL., I must not use pinterest search correctly. I never find much. I do like the private boards though.

Love Pinterest- once you get the hang of following or whose following you, the pins are endless and I can pin something onto my board which is broken down in several categories. A lot of good ideas and inspiration. Like Houzz, but its limiting to me and I find a lot of what they show is very high end. A couple of blogs I follow, but find most follow a similiar pattern.

Annie, I use it mainly to save pictures to my created boards I want to keep from the different blogs I frequent. If I just do a search, I agree it seems repetitive.

I go to Pinterest from time to time, but I just don't get what the big deal is about it.

I like blogs and follow quite a few- no subscribing or anything- I just bookmark them and check on them all along.

Same here!

Not a fan of personal blogs. I prefer Houzz.com, Apartment Therapy and online magazines like Lonny and Trad Home.

I lost interest in blogs when they became 'online shops' The articles are all about how they USE the stuff that a sponsor gave them.

I am not looking to 'use' up stuff so I lost interest.

I like Pinterest because IT is FOR ME! I don't care if people like my selections or not, I just do it for me... for fun. I have not done many things just for fun and so this is refreshing for me.

And because things change... and I have no intention of slamming my blog friends with constant SPAM... I will not resurrect my blog nor do another. I will do one for communication with my friends, but not public and mostly to record my house reno. I also am turning my old blog into a Blurb book for memories of all the photos...

I love seeing projects others do and that is why I still visit decorating boards, for now anyway!

As a follower of Mary Ruth on pinterest, I can testify that she loves it - and I agree with what she says, as well as others who like it. It felt overwhelming to me at first, but once I learned how to navigate it, I can visit whatever category I'm interested in every few days at whim. And of course, it's a great storage place (unless it shuts down of course, in which case, easy come, easy go, I guess). I did take a quick look at Houzz today, and immediately felt overwhelmed, like where do I start? But I felt like that on pinterest at first as well...
As for having my own blog, I do have one, and it is "public" in the sense that anyone can view it, but it is not "commercial" and it is mainly for myself and very close friends to view the progress (or lack thereof) of my "dream house."

What I LOVE most about Pinterest that I didn't mention was it is FREE! Have you seen the cost of magazines nowadays? The few that are still out there... AND they are all doing the same old same old... mostly ads.. That makes each idea you get (one or two per magazine) $3 to $7 or more PER idea! Pinterest... FREE...free... free, so to me that is a bargain!

Gracie -- I had the same problem trying to get to the original poster too but then figured it out. I just click on the picture of interest. That picture will come up again - click on the pic and you are at the original post -- or the link for instructions, is usually there, above the pic.

I like to use the search box in the upper left -- just type in a general or specific search term, i.e.: lamps, shades, gardens, recipes, painted furniture, repurpose, white, yellow, bottles, signs, etc.

I tried signing up but got too much junk, confusion, recommendations, etc. So now I am just a browser. If I see something I like, I just take a screen pic of it and save it in a folder on my desktop.

Just curious as to why you take screen shots? Isn't it easier to just save the pic? Maybe I'm not understanding what you said!

I take a screen shot so that I can capture just the pic and the info attached to it. I have a Mac and its just the easiest way for me to do it. Like this:

MyLifeVacation1, when you do a search on Pinterest, is there a way to eliminate all the duplicates? Thanks for your help.

Gracie -- I wish I could help you but I honestly don't know why you get duplicates. I just did two searches of "painted furniture" and "white furniture" and I don't recall seeing any dups at all, except that a piece may have shown up in both searches.

Sometimes I just browse that page or else type a specific search in the upper left box. I am NOT signed in as a member. My browser is Safari -- that should not make a difference though.

For me, nothing beats a magazine. I like to have one handy to flip through while I eat my lunch. It's pretty much a daily ritual for me. Anything online, or on a device can't compare.

Thank goodness the magazines I love have not gone away, like Architectural Digest, Veranda, Traditional Home and House Beautiful. I subscribe to them all. (I do miss Metropolitan Home, however.)

Like coco, I love to curl up with magazines and have w-a-a-y too many taking up w-a-a-y too much shelf space in my home.

I love those magazines too, I do miss Met Home, and have a few old issues, I loved Apartment Life a long time ago too.

I purged some of the old collection of magazines I had... but have a pile of my favs still!

About Pinterest:
I do save screen shots for my own inspirational files. I use these for reference to something I am thinking about for my home. And when I feel like viewing photos... I have Pinterest AND my own personal (screeshots) Inspirational file to motivate me or let me visualize something for my home. I can get the 'feel' of the space as if I visit somewhere... and see what captures my attention.

I LOVE how things work, how they are made, and how they are displayed.. so photos can keep this ole gal amused for hours! FREE thanks to the internet and my computer!

Ive never been to Pinterest, and as it turns out, I'm not much of a reader either, so i just go to Houzz on my ipad. I see pictures for inspiration and that's all i want to see.


It seemed that Pinterest was a little too involved for what i wanted to do, plus, another site that requires an ID and PW to log in. sigh...

I only occasionally check out Pinterest, usually searching for a particular topic I'm interested in. I actually prefer Houzz as a resource.

I don't visit as many blogs as I used to as try not to spend too much time online. There are a few Canadian blogs I visit a couple of times a week and I have them bookmarked. I have hundreds of other blogs bookmarked also but only occasionally visit a few European ones. I find so many American blogs are full of advertising. I tend to look at pics and only occasionally read the posts. Most are not worth reading IMO.

I also love magazines but after giving away decades worth of saved magazines a few years ago I vowed I wouldn't buy or save more. Unfortunately I can't resist occasionally buying one or two so now have a stack of them again. Must remember to take them to some of the waiting rooms in town that need a new infusion of good reading material. I do like looking at many online magazines.

I also wanted to mention Houzz. I loved that site and it does have some good posts, but you will now notice that they have changed... they are NOW all professionals or in the industry, heading towards being a large advertising (but not seeming like they are) place for professionals to post photos of their work. Not a bad idea for them, they will create a large network for those who do professional work.

I have personally talked to one of the writers when I was contacted to comment on a particular topic. So, I am going by my conversation with that person (called an office # they gave me).
They also use some posters (as they asked me too) to refer GOOD contractors to showcase their work. Some of the ones who write for them are professionals with their own business.

It was good while it lasted... for just viewing... now it will become where you check out local contractor's work. I think it will help those who need referrals to good work in their area.

Pinterest also has "http://pinpro.shows.it/" as a page to go to for understanding how to advertise and use Pinterest as a way to spread your business through photos and ads.

The internet is fast becoming SPAMified! LOL

I look at pics on pinterest several times a day -- and I don't sign in. I didn't like being signed in -- got me confused. So now I just go and browse - either in general (all) or by specific subject.

I love pinterest. I can find things on there that interest me.

I do have some blogs saved under favorites but don't go to them very often anymore.

I also belong to a few facebook groups for specific things I like. I like primitive/country style decorating and there are some great groups on there where it is all just normal people posting pictures of their homes, vignettes, crafts, redos etc. I enjoy those more than anything. The group owners don't put up with spam and block those that do. They also don't put up with any nonsense.

I never really got into blogs, not enough there to hold my attention for too long.

I visit Houzz and Pinterest on a regular basis and have several hundred ideas saved in Houzz. Even DH goes to Houzz...he got hooked on it as fast as I did. LOL!

Wanted to add that I have found some great recipes on Pinterest.

As far a magazines... AD, Veranda and Florida Design give me an unlimited supply of ideas.
