Our kitchen is a cherry shaker style cabinet, so is the linen closet in the hallway, which is right next to our bathroom. Do you have to match woods or styles? For instance, I noticed the one that was suggested in a prior post and I like it a lot, but don't know if it would work if our hall closet was a shaker style in off-white color.

You absolutely do not have to match styles between the bath and kitchen. I don't think I've ever lived in a house where they matched.

Mine do, but not by choice. The builder wasn't much of a designer LOL

We live in a condo, so prior to redecorating everything in this place matched. Not anymore!

As long as the styles are somewhat compatible. In other words, the degree of formality should be similar.

I think it is nice when cabinets go with the architectural style of the house, and I do like them to have continuity. I don't mind when painted and stained cabinets are mixed in a home, or when a piece of furniture is brought in to use as a vanity in a bathroom. Those differences provide a nice variety so things don't get boring. But I would seriously hesitate doing really different styles of cabinets in one house.
