So I am at a loss for how to use this space. Please take a look at these pics and tell me what you would do with it??? The TV really can only go in that one spot and if I put the couch against the stairwell it really cuts off that wall and makes the room feel smaller.

I do plan to put a little accent table underneath the photo window that is hanging on the wall so that will add something there (we just moved in so we're still aquiring pieces.)

Also, that awful side table is about to get a new life and be re-finished in the same stain as the coffee table that I did. We also have another side table we might use instead because I think that one is a bit "heavy" for the room. . what do you think??

Anyway, please post your ideas and I will arrange as they come and take pics! Thank you so much!! This is all making my head hurt! LOL

pretty room - love the colors!

Pull the coffee table and the couch forward (towards the tv). It will create a better path behind the couch and bring the furnishings into a cozier arrangement. You'll also have space for a slim sofa table or console behind the couch.

What is the grey color on the wall, if you don't mind sharing? It really is pretty.

Ok, so I do agree about bringing rhe couch in but then what do I do with the chair? If it stays on that side it will run into the tile in front of the fire place and I am not sure if it will fit on the other side. I will have to try it. (Also do you think that chair color goes ok with the couch?? I assumed since they are both neutrals it would work but I am new at this...lol)

Also what about that side table that I am going to refinish...too heavy for the room???

Your room is coming along very nicely! JMO... I would not use that end table and the legs of the coffee table seem too stark against the other colors.

I love to use vintage tables, and there are a lot out there. This side table seems too chunky!

I agree about the side table....I have another one that we are making from an antique step ladder, much "lighter" and will fit in better I think.

The ladder side table will be painted and stained the same as the coffee table...will that help tie it all in? Or so you still think the cream doesn't work? I guess I could do a darker color on the base?? The stair banister and the picture window are cream so I guess i thought it would go with all that. Ahhh, clearly I don't know what I am doing. Lol

BTW...I moved the couch and table closer to the tv....amazing what a few feet does!! Lol. It looks so much better already. Now I really need to find a table for under that window.

I personally think you could paint the end table cream with a dark top like your coffee table and it would match better....Where you have the square pictures on the wall....In my opinion, I would put a tallish, shallow bookcase there with some books, knick knacks, plants...etc. A floor lamp at one end of your couch and a lamp on the newly painted end table between the couch and the chair....I am not too sure about the figured pillows on the couch....I don't see that they match anything. Down the road, I would look for some lighter colored drapes.....more in keeping with your pretty wall color.

My first impressions are that you have a problem with scale in the room. The TV and TV stand is completely dwarfed by the mantel and mirror. You might think about finding a taller, bulkier TV stand. Your fireplace seems tall and the mantel high so I'd lean the mirror on the mantel to bring it down to human level. Most people probably still wouldn't be able to see their reflection in it so perhaps a mirror is not the best choice for there. You might use artwork that is about the same size as the mirror and lean it on the mantel. Or use several prints across. With tall ceilings don't try to hang anything higher than you would with 8-10' ceilings.

The coffee table base seems very white in the pic (altho may not be IRL) and I think would benefit by a brown "antique" wash which will tone it down. Your color scheme is fine (gold and grey go great) altho you might add another color from the print cushions (such as the red) to use for some accessories. Or find some art with touches of red in it. However, that would be my choice because I like color!

I don't think the side table is too heavy, actually it's good to have a piece without legs as all of the other pieces do have legs. The scale is good with the sofa and chair as the top is even with the arms.

I think there is space for the gold chair on the other side of the sofa so it's not on the tile.

Back to scale - the door and window openings into the kitchen are very tall. I think I'd try to find something to hang as transoms at the top of those to bring them down to human scale. You might find some metal hangings in an architectural warehouse, old windows, or have some stained glass pieces custom made. Stained glass can be done in clear, white, and textured glass not only color and that's what I'd use. Just something to think about down the road.

You're doing fine, please take a deep breath and relax. Decorating your new house should be fun!

I agree with Joyluck that you need a beefier t.v. cabinet and that the mirror over the fireplace should be lowered.

But first thank you, thank you, thank you for posting pictures showing four sides of the room because it is a lot easier to give advice.

I'm going to pretend now that I have not read any of the other answers and just give advice from my perspective.

I think the draperies on the window are too overwhelming and that they are not needed at all. They create a third focal point when they should not. I would remove them.

The sofa and the carpeting look too similar in color, have you considered a slip cover?

You need some lamps and actually you could use two more chairs. If you had two armless (slipper) chairs you could put them at right angles to the sofa (in front of the window wall) pull the wing chair to face them. Move the drum table back to be beside the sofa. Get another table for the other side of the sofa and lamps for both those tables.

You could use many more pictures or other hangings on your walls. The frame of the photographs is too pale for the walls.

While I like the white base on the coffee table (and the table itself) you need more white in accessories somewhere.

This looks like a very nice comfortable home and if you are a new homemaker you will easily acquire things so don't rush out and buy a lot at once. But you have room to accommodate more things.

Back to the window. That looks so pretty in itself that I think it needs no curtains other than the blinds, unless somehow they are needed for privacy.

Wow! Lol...can one of you just come put it all together for me! I am so overwhelmed.. well first of all I am very aware that the room is bare and we need to pull more colors in etc but we dont have the budget for that right now. That's why I am just trying to focus on arranging what I do have for now. We intend on painting the rest of the room and then that picture window will not blend in so much. The curtains have tk stay because otherwise we would have a sauna for the living room. Lol

I do agree about the tv stand but unfortunately that is a new ourchase and it was final clearance so we can't return it. Any ideas on how to fix that problem with what we have? Hang something above the tv??

We can't afford any more furniture etc right now so I just have to make what I have work...although now I am freaking out that it is just gonna look terrible based off all the comments of how unbalanced it all looks...lol!!

Ok...so I have been playing around...hoping to take pics and post them for you in the morning for opinions.

Right now j have the sofa angled towards the fireplace and moved the chair to the left (where the tv is currently) and then will move the tv on the staircase wall. (it isn't a tall wall so maybe that would help with the low media stand??)

I will post pics ....but what do you think?

A couple of thoughts for your room. Have you considered continuing the paint color within the whole room? It would lend continuity to the space instead of the block of white and then color on one wall.

Perhaps a darker shade of your blue-gray onto the FP wall. The mirror could be turned upright since you have a tall space there. Be sure that whatever is reflected in the mirror is pleasing also.

The yellow chair looks lonely sitting over there by itself. How about bringing it in closer to the sofa. The furniture should connect with each other and not float out in the room as single items. Move the end table next to the sofa too. (I think I have a similar table).

The white coffee table could be painted a lighter/darker grey to work with your sofa too. Move it a little closer also. Add a tray/platter/bowl/books to the coffee table for decoration.

The floral pillows are pretty and colorful. Move one over to the chair so it has color too. Sit the other pillow on the opposite end of the sofa and put the yellow oblong pillow next to it.

Ok, here are pics of what I did in the middle of the night last night when I couldn't sleep! LOL

Note:

1.The picture window will be moving onto the dark accent wall.

2. An accent table will be going on the wall that currently has the picture window and I will hang small pictures above it.

3. I intend on getting a floor lamp (one with the built in table . .I have been eyeing one for quite a while and now I have a reason to get it.) and I will put it next to the chair.

4. I DO intend on painting the rest of the room, not quite as dark as the accent wall, but continuing the gray color throughout. We just haven't had time yet. . so use your "visualizing" goggles. haha! We will also be putting in hardwood floor in the next year or so, so that awful carpet will be gone one day.

Is this setup any better than the other one??? Or should I put it all back?

First of all, I want to say I love your tv stand. I know others say it might be dwarfed by that big wall, but I love the lines and color of that piece. Seems to be one of the most interesting pieces in your living room. I liked the way your furniture was arranged the first time. If you move your tv stand back to the big grey wall, maybe you could add some big colorful canvases so it won't be so dwarfed. (I found some that someone created their self. Or if you have kids, you could always set them to work.) I also agree, that you need to lower that mirror down asap. Even if you just set it on the mantle and lean it against the wall, if you don't want to rehang it, would be a definite improvement. Otherwise, hang only an inch or two above. You could still add some interesting candles in front of the mirror. I saw someone also commented about your throw pillows. I agree. You have this gorgeous sexy grey velvet sofa. The pillows don't bring out it in all it's glory. And I know everyone has to work with their budget so when you can, maybe replace your coffee table. I could see something a bit more modular. I love your side chair and throw pillow on it. Keep it up. Big spaces are hard to do.

I should add, spray paint is your friend. You could always darken the legs of your coffee table, frame (on your collage photos), etc. I like Rustoleum in Bronzed Brown.

Yes, I LOVE spray paint! I spray painted all our bathroom door knobs. LOL!

I think I am even more confused now then I was before. Because I think I like the space with the couch facing the fireplace, but of course am second guessing myself now that I have all these opinions. haha!

That gold pillow came with the chair and I thought it would help tie in that color . .orgiinally (pre chair purchase) that round purple pillow sat between those two rectangular ones.

Yes, I like that pillow combination much better! Just sit with your room arrangement for awhile if you like it. You can always move it around again later. Good luck!

Plus, I couldn't tell before, thought maybe your coffee table had a glass top. I do think a rectangular or 2 box coffee tables with a glass top would add a nice touch. Maybe you could scour craigslist.

Well, I am actually in love with my coffee table. It is that vintage touch/shape that I was wanting and am worried with a glass square/modular table it will get too modern. I re-finished that one so if the legs are too bright then I can just add a glaze on top. They definitely look whiter in the picture than they do in the actual room.

Well I guess I'll just sit with it the way it is for a bit and see how I feel in a couple days (before moving that huge window frame to the accent wall). Family is coming this weekend so I HAVE to get this figured out by then.

FYI. . we are taking the advice on the mirror above the fireplace. Should we keep in horizontal and lower it or should we turn it vertical and lower it? Would it look better resting on the mantel or would it look better hung just an inch or two above?

Great, I do like those pillows much better. Play around with the mirror. Rest it on the mantel horizontal. Since the mirror isn't too tall, I'd think, it would look better this direction. And because it's not too tall, I would imagine raising it an inch or two would probably be best. But like I said, it won't hurt to look at it with it resting on the mantle. I do think, moving the collage frame to the big grey wall may actually cause the same problem you had in the first place with the tv. It will probably not look to scale. I actually think it fits that other wall (where it currently resides) much better. Don't stress about everything with your family coming. My house is constantly evolving and changing.

If I don't move the window to that gray wall, what should go there? I can't just leave the wall empty can I?

Hmm, let me take a pic of hubby holding it on that wall and see if that helps. . LOL. I am the worst at visualizing things. I have to see it first!

And here is a picture with the mirror vertically resting on the mantel.

We tried it horizontal and it takes up the entire mantel and barely fits. So, if it doesn't look good vertically then my only option is to hang it horizontally a few inches above the mantel, so I can still put accessories up there.

Also, the mantel is pretty shallow, so I cannot put anything in front of the mirror if it is resting on it. . only on the sides of it.

Thoughts on this??

New dilemma. . .where I was going to put the accent table on the wall where the window is currently hanging. . well we just don't have enough space for one over there. It blocks too much of the entry into the master bedroom.

So now what do I do? How do I fill that empty portion of the wall?

I really like the new arrangement of furniture! Yes, to the mirror being vertical, too!!!

Well, I am happy to say that I think I can finally "see" the room. I love the way it is situated right now and now I am on the hunt for accessories to go around the mirror on the fireplace, a floor lamp/table for next to the chair and a deep basket (to fill with blankets) to put in place of that awful fake plant next to the fireplace. (thank goodness for store credit at Hobby Lobby!!) I stuck a basket underneath the coffee table and some brown fake books I have underneath the ladder table and I really think that helped even out some of the cream in those pieces. It brought the brown into it.

Give me a few days but I will come back and post a picture with the finishing touches .. .well, it won't be totally finished, but "more" finished. ha!

Should I post the pic back on this thread, or start a new one when I do?? Not sure how all that works? LOl
