Hoosier cabinets.... Sign In/Join

Anyone have one and have pictures of how you have it decorated? or any saved pictures you can share???

We inherited a white Hoosier cabinet with red trim from dh's family and I've just brought it out this week and cleaned it up really well...magic erasers are awesome. Anyway I'm in the process of decorating it and would love to see pictures of others to get ideas. I'm into the country, primitive, antique style for it but any pictures can give me inspiration. The one I have has the flour sifter in it.

BTW I haven't posted pictures of the new house and move since one of the things misplaced in the move is my cord that goes from my computer to my camera. Oy!! I'm still searching for the silly thing. Roll Eyes

OH BOY - Lisa Ann it took me MONTHS to find the cord after we moved into our house! It will drive you nutso till you find it, sorry to say Group Hug

Hoosiers are lovely - maybe some mason jars as flower vases or a small rolling pin rack used to hold wine (or a small wine rack used to hold the rolling pins). Do you have a small collection of any sort to display - mixing bowls perhaps?

Hope you find your camera cord soon so we can see! Seems something always goes missing in a move but will eventually turn up.

I don't have a Hoosier altho did a quick search and found some sites w/pics. Some are CR so I didn't post pics. Since you likely don't want to rush out and buy a bunch of antique or vintage kitchen accessories you'll probably use what you have and over time find things in thrift stores or yard sales. This could include vintage looking bowls, canisters, crocks, canning jars, small kitchen utensils. Almost anything that could have been in use in a vintage kitchen as the Hoosier was the work center of the kitchen especially for baking.

Some of these sites have 'store like' displays but you may get some ideas from them:

Pretty and pink
Vintage Mix-Master here half-way down
Platter, kitchen scale, rolling pin
Egg beater, tea towel, cook book
Hand crank coffee grinder, tinware
Wire egg basket, pottery pitchers, coffee pot

Does your camera have an SD card? If so, you can take the card out of the camera, pop it into your computer or printer and transfer pix that way. I damaged my cord, so it's the ONLY way I can do it.

Hope it's that simple!

I've had a couple of Hoosiers...an antique, which I gave away, and a reproduction (based on the antique) but I don't have pix. Sorry. I put antique kitchen items on and in mine and I used to have quite a collection. A crock with wooden spoons and mashers, a butter churn, rolling pins, old metal utensils, mason jars, yellow ware bowls, wooden bowls, coffee grinders...can't remember any more!

Have fun collecting treasures for yours!

Here is my Hoosier (do not own it any longer) from a few old photos I found. This was around 34 yrs ago.

The white paint was factory finish, brand name Sellers. That finish was very hard to take off but I did it. I only had the metal flour drawer not sifter in mine.

Thanks so much for all the ideas. I've got to do some digging around and see what I can come up with. May be some things still at my inlaws place I can use. We already dug out some of the old green mason jars so I need to get those cleaned up. I was just thinking that a clear jar with old cookie cutters might work. I have a few old cookie cutters. I do have lots of bowls and love the old stoneware and old pyrex.

Mary Ruth I can just imagine the work to get that finish off.

Thank you Belstone for the info on the card. Mine does have one. I'll have to get my son or daughter to show me how it works. Still hoping to find that silly cord.

Brenda thank you for the links. Love those.

Lisa Ann - if you look on ebay there is a book written about Hoosiers & the look alike cabinets. They have AWESOME pics! Author's last name is Kennedy if I remember correctly. My sister has my grandmother's ORIGINAL Hoosier & I have a copy. I put a yellow ware bowl under the sifter, I filled the upper cabinet part with mason jars filled with dried peas, beans & lentils. The shelf behind the tambour door has a colander, a 3 tier pie rack/stand & I actually have fake pastries in the top plate! They look SO real that a friend asked me how I keep them from getting stale! I also have some cow items as I LOVE cows & an aged linen dish towel, rolling pin & some cookie cutters. My goal was to make it look like I was baking & was called away during the process. I'm sure you can make your cabinet totaly you!
As for the camera cord, go to ebay (love that site!) & buy a card reader. You then pull the card from your camera, put it in the reader & then the reader plugs into your USB port on your computer! No need for a cord at all! The readers ship from Hong Kong with free shipping & can start as low as 10 CENTS! I have picked up 10 or more & never paid over 50 cents for any of them! They seem to work fine. I even gave some away to friends as gifts!
You can PM me if you need help with the readers. Have fun & good luck decorating your Hoosier!

Thank you cowlady. What you have on yours sounds like the ideas I have in my head. I'll look for the book. I'm sure I would love looking at it and getting ideas. I was thinking I wanted mine to look like I was baking. My son and daughter ordered me an antique dough bowl for Mother's Day. I was thinking I'd get a vintage rolling pin to go with it. I have some vintage cookie cutters and some of the old jars with the wire that holds them down. Might be pretty to fill one of the jars with cookie cutters. Have several of the old blue canning jars too. I like roosters and sunflowers so I'm sure some of them will find there way on it. Oh and yes I have several of the old bowls...stoneware and the old pyrex. All the ideas are pulling it together in my head.
...oh and the cord has been found. I remember one of the totes had my speakers in it and I had my son to check and see if the cord was in with it and it was. yeah!!! I'll post pictures soon. Smile

Lisa Ann- are you still going to decorate with your chickens like in your other kitchen?

I don't have a picture to post right now- I was in your area this weekend for the TN Tech graduation Sat. and we just got home! So I am too pooped to make a pic right now...

I have a white hoosier with black trim(wish it was red!). On top of it I have a couple of chickens and a fruit platter and some vintage 40s metal cannisters with the Oven bake/Harker fruit pattern.

I store my baking supplies in the top cabinets. the middle section has more of my vintage Oven Bake collection on display and I use the bottom for storage too.

I am planning on adding in some roosters and chickens and yep I'm using them in the rest of the kitchen too. I would love to see a picture of yours if you have time to take one sometime.

You were very close to my neck of the woods. I'm about a little over an hour from Tech. Was closer before the move. I was in Cookeville on Saturday with my dh shopping for dh some new shoes. My son, daughter and nephew went down for comic book day and to go to the theater to watch the Avengers movie. Congrats to your graduate. My son and daughter graduated from there.

BTW I have been googling...dangerous for me I know. LOL but I found the mother load of hoosier cabinet pictures. I thought I'd share it here to in case someone else might be interested.

Well, my post got moderated. Mad

Sat. was my first visit to Cookevile other than passing through on I-40. I love what I saw and would consider relocating there if it weren't so far from my kids.

And just so you know when your're in town- Ralph's Donuts is da b*mb! I would not need to be near there! And they are right around the corner from Hobby Lobby!

I will post a pic for you later today.
