When you walk into my main bath, you look straight ahead at the bathtub and the tile that goes above it (13 rows of 4- or 5-inch white tiles). Above that is an off-white space of wall about 58" wide x 24" high. This shower never is used. I have a shower curtain on each end of the tub, with tiebacks. The space above the tub is crying out for something to be placed there! I've looked at pictures, scrolled metal wall art, but haven't seen anything that I thought would work. I'm no artist, so a mural isn't possible. I've googled bathroom wall decor but didn't have any success there. Any suggestions? Years ago, I used to have two or three ceramic fish with about three or four different sized bubbles. I sure wish I had them now. This message has been edited. Last edited by: CA Lori,

Hi Lori. Posting a pic of the area in question would be most helpful. Here are some ideas you may or may not have considered tho.... ~a plaque ~framed papers or fabrics ~plates ~grillwork/gatework ~wall words ~decales ~fretwork ~framed colorful tiles ~architectural salvage such as a pediment or top of an arched window frame ~paint it a color found in the room scheme ~picture frame molding ~a grouping of medallions ~a mosaic piece

Cathy, I'm in the SF-Bay Area. Here's the photo. ![]()

I am north of the bay...Marin county. I see what you mean....I don't think I'd hang anything there but instead focus on a pretty shower curtain. ROTFLMAO . . . those are my "pretty new curtains." I replaced a multi-colored (rose, teal, beige, lavendar, jade) floral shower curtain that had 2 pulled-back panels and a ruffled valance across the middle. When I put up the replacement one shower curtain, it was just to stark of a change for me, so I bought a second matching curtain which helped. But, to me, it still looks bare! This message has been edited. Last edited by: CA Lori,

Here's a common shower curtain treatment for high walls: http://robinfliessouth.blogspo...-shower-curtain.html ![]()

The shower curtain IS nice, very pretty in fact but it doesn't grab your eye. I like the pic post above, that would take up the space nicely and you could STILL use your current curtain, just find something that coordinates with it. Can you sew? If not, then look for somthig pre-made like a window valance. Your bathroom is very nice as it is. Does it bother you that there is nothing above the shower surround? Ooooooh, I like that valance. Yes, that bare space bothers me and yes I sew, but I've never sewn a valance like that. Maybe I can google this valance and get directions. Finding a coordinating fabric might be tricky. Thx for the idea! If I had any energy, I'd do a striae stripe on that left wall above the wainscoting and across the end wall above the tub. This message has been edited. Last edited by: CA Lori,

I would think that Valance would be easy. Just need to decide how big (and now MANY) you want your pleats to be. I am thinking it is attached to the ceiling with a 1x3 board screwed into the studs. Gotta go and look at my shower curtain now and see if I can do a valance like that or if it would be too much (small bathroom). Got to thinking this morning while in my shower (in the tub) that if you put a valance all the way to the ceiling, it will be pretty dark in there when you shower. Something to think about. I wonder if you could hang the shower rod higher and put pretty hooks on that? A valance seems like a good idea, but it might make it more steamy in there, which is very nice for a shower, but I wonder could lead to more mold? I have 10' ceilings so everything is hung high in my house, and i don't notice the over head space as much now. I'm in the far east bay, Brentwood. This message has been edited. Lori, Love the idea of a valance over the shower curtain. My friend used a cornice board style like that for her bath. Looks so pretty. You just need a couple of those "L" brackets to attach it to the sides. Good Luck! ~Like sands through the hourglass ~So are the days of our lives

Hi Lori! Have you looked for wall decals? Some others suggested them here but I really think that they would be a solution to your problem. There are so many colors and designs - I recently put some Gerber Daisies in my bathroom and everyone who comes through my home loves them! This message has been edited. I think a valance would make the room look too heavy. But you can't necessarily go by me because I always think less is more in many cases, and this one is one of them. I personally don't object to the empty space but as long as you do, (and that's what counts most), why not consider a 2-3" band of a pretty patterned strip of decorator tile (picking up the colors of the room), to go right above and straight across the tile and then continue to the top with the regular tile again?
|
A piece of lattice painted white or a piece of fretwork serving as a valance would keep the room light/airy while filling the void that's troubling you.

What about something like this? Not my bath, but a picture I saved from online. I think this are actually drapery sheers or light curtains of some sort by the look of the way they were put on the shower curtain rod. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Always1StepBehind, ![]()

Always, I too was going to suggest raising the rod and featuring longer shower panels, but I thought CA Lori thought a valance might close the space in, which is why I didn't suggest this option, tho I personally think it solves the problem.
