Kitchen cabinets have to match kitchen table? |

We have cherry cabinets with black granite countertops. We are shopping for a kitchen table but do not know if it has to match the cabinets or if it should be a contrasting wood color? I am wondering if a black, cherry or black and cherry table would make the kitchen too dark or the same. The table will be sitting in a straight line with the kitchen island which is black and cherry. Would a contrasting wood color be good and what color would that be? Or is it better to try to match? I prefer wood over glass as we have small children.

If your buying a new table I would match it. I took my drawer from my kitchen in a paper bag and matched the table to the cabinets. I like the uniform look. If you have small children I would agree don't get glass.

You could do the light natural cherry color which is beautiful.

I do think it needs to match -- drawer idea is a good idea to see how the table looks with the cabinets in the store BEFORE purchase.
I think a black table legs and a cherry top or a black table with cherry chairs or a cherry table with black chairs would look good. Martha |

I don't believe that the table and chairs in a kitchen must match the cabinets in wood tone, HOWEVER, I do believe they should compliment them in STYLE. So you wouldn't put a very rustic/country/distressed table and chairs in a formal style cherry/black granite kitchen.
What color accents do you have in the kitchen? If the kitchen table and chairs are a harmonious STYLE with the cabinets they could even be painted a color that matches your accents. Thanks for all the input. I actually have some natural color (light basket colors) and jewel tone blues (glassware) in my kitchen as accents. Not really the colors you'd think to put in there but some of the things I previously have and still love from my previous kitchen. I think they still look ok as accents so I had considered a more natural color table to go along with the natural baskets, natural color high chair and natural mixed wood fiber window treatments. (The natural window treatments actually have light streaks of the cherry cabinet color too). But didn't know if a natural looking table would look out of place with the cabinets since it is a much larger item than just small accents here and there?

Best way to know that is to live with it awhile and trust your feelings.
