We put a contract down a new home, but I'm struggling with how to decorate and what style the house is. The woodwork is all an unusual color and the floors are tile and whitewashed wood floors (though not so white)... if any of that makes sense. Lots of different wood tones in the house. It really doesn't seem cohesive to me with all the colors and wood tones going on. What do you think?

My palette has always been very neutral... browns, rusts, golds, etc. I know the mint green and pink rooms won't stay, but am lost as to what to do. So, starting with choosing the style of the house! I'm thinking traditional?

Of course, I'll know a lot more once we are in the house! Hopefully!

Master Bedroom - all neutral in this room. The bathroom is same cabinets and granite as kitchen. This room is more my style - more casual and relaxed.

That looks like a very nice house!!! I hope it becomes yours!!!

If you are looking for opinions, here is mine. I would get rid of all that tile and repaint every room that you have shown.I think that the goldish color in the kitchen really clashes with the countertops and backsplash.

Could the floors be stained a little darker to warm things up? If this house is in a warm climate it might be okay.

I would replace the floors and paint every room according to your furnishings. Unless, of course, you plan getting everything new, then plan accordingly. You've heard it often enough to pull colors from your rugs, drapes, bedding, etc. Although I am partial to your color pallet also, with the browns, rusts, etc.

I just looked again. I meant replace the tile floors. I agree with darkening the existing wood floors.

This house seems very contemporary to me...by that I mean something designed recently with no reference to any specific "style". It has touches of traditional elements, but the vaulted ceilings, stacked windows, skylights and uncased arches move it into contemporary.

This is the sort of house where the sky's the limit in terms of decor...just about anything will work...as long as the scale is right! The operative word is BIG! That dining room will require a very large table, both in size and scale...no delicate Queen Anne cabriole legs here! Same goes for the great room. You're gonna have some fun, I'll bet!

ETA: Your color leanings will work beautifully in this house, I believe. Mint green? Pink? What WERE they thinking?

Belstone nailed it. This home is a pastiche of styles and architectural elements, which can be a blessing or a curse when it comes to decorating.

I can't add much to what has already been posted, except to say that it's best to live in a new home (and, here I am assuming your contract will be accepted) and wait a while before decorating. You will need to acclimate yourself to the rooms, the changing light, the house's idiosyncrasies, and how your household routines will change in a new house.

This home, with all its space and volume, will be quite the decorating adventure. It could also be a budget-buster. Which is why careful planning and prioritizing should be your first steps in the decorating process. Your home will tell you what it wants and needs; you just have to listen. And, that takes time.

Love what I have seen so far of the house. I rather echo Aychi's sentiments. Kind of made me chuckle though. I have been in this house for 7 years. I'm still not even halfway thru the re-decorating process. And budget busting? You betcha kemosabe. I should have estimated how much it was going to cost before I bought it. On the positive side....I LOVE the house and the new still hasn't worn off. It is a pleasure every day shabby as it is.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Yes, I'm certainly going to wait until I'm in the house a bit to decorate. I really want to be careful with this one and choose wisely. I did already consider the bigger furniture - chunky! I'm not pulling up the tile as it is really beautiful and heated with radiant floor heating... and neutral. I can add area rugs, etc. I was really just asking about style.

From the pics it looks like your floors in the great room have a pink undertone which is only enhanced by the mint green. Your kitchen floors also look like they have a pink undertone along with your granite as it appears there are veins of red. With the right wall color, this kitchen can really come to life. The office I also see pink undertones in the floor.

I agree, its far from cohesive, but still a wonderful home with great potential. Keep your beiges with a pink undertone to mesh with the existing pink undertone in your floors as that will give you a cohesive feel. For added color your options are greens or blues which look nice amongst all the pink.
