I helped my neighbor with her bathroom curtain. We added a sheer fabric to the top of it because she wanted more light in the bathroom. We also raised the rod above the window frame. (She had a seamstress do the gathers on the bottom, which I think is unique.)
She and I think we should raise the gathers a little higher up so the curtain doesn't sit so low. How far up should we go w the bottom hem line? Maybe about 4-6" below the trim? Whattaya think?

No - in fact I think if it were more "boxy" it would look more proportionate to the space. If it can be balanced as 1/3 sheer, 1/3 straight, and 1/3 ruffled it would look fantastic. More gathers will make it even more luxurious.
GREAT idea to add the sheer part to the top...more light and still retain the privacy. I might have to do this for my living room curtains. I wanted top-down blinds but they won't work with my window trim and casement windows.

Well, it looks like we've got an issue if we want to balance the look.
The gathering tapes on the back were only sewn on the bottom portion. Where it starts to gather is where the top of the gathering tape is. It will only raise it a little shorter to gather it up as sewn. So, I guess the only way to get the gathers in in the 1/3 proportion is to remove the gathering tapes and sew on new ones - starting a little higher on the panel.
I think that sounds like a lot of unnecessary work, especially since she paid someone to put on those gathering tapes already.

Agreed - if you can't fix it without undoing work, then leave well enough alone. Leave it as is and she can revisit the issue if it bothers her. Either way, it is still lovely for the space.
