I am having trouble with designing my living room. It is quite a large room measuring 23’- 9” x 18’-5” with a file place at one end and widows along one side. What furniture do I select and how do I arrange it. Thank you for your help

Welcome. Pics would definitely help. In the meantime, the general layout sounds a lot like mine. In a large space, divide and conquer is your motto or should be. Create zones that address your spacial needs and intended uses of this space. Aim a main conversational grouping toward focal points (windows with a view, fireplace, etc.). Anchor groupings w/ area rugs. At the minimum, the front feet of furniture should rest upon the rug. Don't be afraid to bring some furniture pieces out into the room while angling others. Floating furniture can serve as a division and if chosen wisely in terms of backless or swivel styles, can utilize two or more focal points with ease.

Keep scale of furniture in mind as well as traffic flow. Also, keep room balance in mind and feature some vertical pieces to break up the predominate horizontal line of furniture. If storage is lacking, choose pieces that offer storage via a drawered or chest coffee table, a small dresser as an end table, bookcases/cabinetry, storage ottoman or bench. Take careful measurements including entryways before you shop too. Keep high ticket items like a sofa fairly neutral for flexibility of scheme down the line. Adults in the family should test out furniture as you shop as everyone's needs vary. Don't buy a matched set of anything as it's too predicatable and boring. Do shop slowly one piece at a time. Hope these tips help.

It's easy. Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can.
