A pic of your hearth would help. BTW, do you mean hearth or mantel? Decide how formal you wish this/these areas. Factor in these things...contrast, style of decor, feel you seek and room scheme tho accents are fine too. The hearth could feature things like...kindling vessels, tools, tall vase with dried elements, branches, feathers, a topiary, crocks, a chest, a fireside basket with greens, etc. The mantel could feature things like... Photos, framed paintings or prints, signs, a clock, TOPIARIES, boxes, books, candlesticks, lantern, sconce, vases, faux fruit, plate on a stand, sculpture, figurine, grouping of picture frames, trailing plant, sign, plaque, standing letter, standing words, mirror, etc. Decide if you prefer a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement. Group smaller items, very heights, shapes, colors, textures. Larger items create visual impact. Focus light onto this area and address the wall area above the mantel. Often things like large prints, tapestries, mirrors, grillwork a lg. wall sconce, lg. clock or architectural are featured there.

I agree with sjf -- gather your stuff and play!

And do look at Cara Rose's thread -- lots of good pictures there.
