The previous owners of our home put in the 2" plantation blinds on the back side of the house. The rest of the house has the typical mini blinds. We're thinking of putting in the 2" plantation blinds in keeping with the back of the house. BUT...I've noticed several homes in our neighborhood have the plantation shutters. I like the look of both. I'm sure the shutters cost quite a bit more. If you have the shutters are they terribly expensive? I've never had the shutters or been in a home that has them. I almost feel like I should go up to one of these homes and ask if I could see their windows from the inside!! But I'm not that bold!!!

    Thanks!!

I have both in my home...living room and master bedroom have plantation shutters. They were custom made and cost about $3000.00.(7 windows in all). They are available for less at Home Depot etc. but I could not use those. I have the wood blinds in my bedroom that face the back of the house and they are fine there. I do not use any other window treatments on my shutters but use long panel drapes with the blinds. Will attach pic of the living room area.

Very pretty Limo!! WOW!! That's a tad bit expensive for me!! I'm wondering too if the shutters would work for me if I do not have moulding around my windows? I just have a sash and nothing on either side or on the top. I guess I'll probably end up going with the blinds, but I really love how yours look!!

    Thanks

You may have windows that the premade shuttes will work. They can be mounted outside the window frame also. The blinds look nice too and closed from outside they look similar. I like the shutters as I do not have to use other drapes..unless I wanted too. Measure you windows and check out the ones available...you can get them in faux wood also which cost less I think for the same look. Good luck.

Plantation shutters are not even close to being in the same league as the blinds price-wise. We had plantation shutters in our kitchen. While I liked the look, I also like full view windows and usually kept them swung open. We ran into them and the got in the way so many times that we finally just took them down and opted to have the full view out the window. So, it depends. If you really like looking out your windows, I wouldn't spend the money as they are pricey. They take up space in the room when you swing them open. The blinds don't. If you don't look out the windows, then that's a different story. They're beautiful and look much more refined than blinds. If you still want them, shop around for pricing. They'll be much higher than the blinds, but they're one of those things that has signoficant price differences between vendors. Also, check Home Depot. They have a program that isn't too unreasonable but you have to measure and install them yourselves. It's a good option if you're handy at all.

I used to work at HD in the blind department. Custom made wood shutters are about $6.15 a square foot. Typically, most windows are at least $100 each. The pre-made shutters at HD are plastic. If you do decide to go with custom shutters, make sure you measure very well. You should measure the top, middle, and bottom each direction. If they're the slightest bit off for an inside mount, it won't work and they're non-refundable. You could always buy the pre-made shutters now and replace them with custom ones whenever your budget allows.
