Door and shutters color Sign In/Join

My house has light gray siding with a deep charcoal (almost black) hip roof. What colors would you suggest for shutters and door color?

Hi Nickliss, I responded under the Colors section. Sometimes, 2 threads get a little confusing.

Good Luck!

I have that very same color combo on my house and we have a darker gray accents and door. The trim and porch is white. Some might call it boring, but it does look nice. I would love, however, to paint the front door a bright color.

I love any of these combos w/ gray on gray facades:

black shutters, red door
black shutters, yellow door
navy shutters and door
black shutters and coral or barn red/brick door
white shutters and yellow door
burgundy shutters and black door
black shutters, golden door
black or white shutters and turquoise door
deep green shutters and door
black shutters and a shade of purple door that is not too dark as to compete with the black

White trim is prefered in any case.

Factor in these things and view chips under the varied lighting conditions of your home's facade:

HOW FAR BACK DOES YOUR HOUSE SIT FROM THE CURB?
WHAT DIRECTION DOES YOUR HOUSE FACE"
IS THE FRONT DOOR IN SHADE DUE TO A TREE OR OVERHANG?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? (CUES CAN COME FROM YOUR ENTERIOR PALETTE THO NOT NECESSARY TO REPEAT THEM OUTSIDE)
THE STYLE OF YOUR HOME MAY PROVIDE CLUES ESPECIALLY IF A HISTORICAL ERA HOME OR DESIGN
IF STONEWORK OR BRICKWORK IS PART OF YOUR EXTERIOR, THESE CAN GIVE COLOR CUES

TIPS: The front door should be highly visible from the curb. If in the shadow, opt for a light or brighter color than if it were exposed to direct sunlight and/or close to the road. Color cues can come via your plantings. Flower boxes and planters can be added to bring more color to your neutral facade. Beef up entry exterior lighting if need be. If opting for a dark door, consider adding new hardware and perhaps a kick plate to serve as jewelry. Take metal cues from existing light fixtures. A colorful door mat will further bring color to the entry while serving a practical purpose. Drive around your local area and observe similar colors on houses to yours while noting what they teamed via shutters and door coloration.

I so agree! Wish I had a gray roof, much easier to work with!

With so much gray and black I think the door should add a pop of color and the exterior shutters should complement. I like the black shutters red door suggestion.

Almost anything! You basically have a blank slate; a totally neutral pallet. What's your favorite color? I'd make it bold and bright (no pastels here). Red? Teal? Orchid? Orange? it's hard to say without seeing a pic of your home, but also keep your landscaping in mind. Is it mainly (ever)greens? Or do you have flowers/flowering shrubs? In that case I'd coordinate the door/shutter color with the landscape. It could be STUNNING! Be brave!
