Hi there!

I may be under the wrong forum, but...

I have carpeting over my hardwood floors in my living area...(I had a baby at the time of buying our home and thought carpet would be better for a baby).

Anyways, how much is too much to spend on getting them refinished professionally? I heard not to tackle them as a DIY project.

Also, does anyone know of any good companies in the Greater Cleveland area?

Hi. I suspect hardwood flooring refinishers vary from region to region and even locally. I would obtain references from trusted family members, neighbors, coworkers, friends in your area. If none exists, I'd call three local companies who specialize in this and obtain written estimates. Be sure to take mental notes on how the estimater addresses the steps involved and anything said that suggests they're top notch. They should also offer you references w/o asking for them. Whenever we hire out, tho rare, we always ask to see if they're bonded and insured.
Also, a high estimate does not guarantee a quality job just as a low one doesn't mean it will be shoddy workmenship. Know what you wish done and what type of protection you desire. If staining is involved, naturally the cost will go up.

The reason many homeowners advise against this as a DIY project is that the rental machines can be cumbersome to handle and you risk gouging your floors. Good refinishers have machines that trap dust too making the project less messy.

Be sure to specify exactly what you wish to be done and check the contract to ensure you get what you are paying for. We once hired pros to finish our DIY installed hardwood flooring. Tho it was readily apparent that they were artisans who cared about their work, one young man accidentally sealed our flush mount wood vents. We can cut them open, but it's a job we don't look forward to. Yes, we could have called them back to remedy it (which I always advise), but we didn't.
