Good morning all! Another Monday means another opportunity to share recent or not so recent, but favorite, finds. Please share pics if you're able to do so or just tell us about them.

Drats, I have nothing to share so I hope you all have some great treasures Smile

Hi, everyone! Since I can no longer see photos on this site, edit a post or use emoticons, I thought the best way to share my Drexel Heritage CL chair with you was to provide a link from the Garden Web site where I posted it. I've tried many times to figure out what is happening here, but nothing I do changes anything.

My before and after pics are here, and on Garden Web, you don't have to log in to see photos. I hope you'll take a peek!

BDM, that's so strange that you can't see pics, edit posts or use emoticons. I wonder if it's a glitch on the boards.

Anyhow, thank you for sharing the makeover on your chair. It turned out beautifully and I'm so impressed you were able to recover it yourself. I agree the two fabrics go together very nicely. Good to see Riley approves too.

It is June and we finally got to go to some Estate Sales! I did bring home some finds!

Martha
I love these type of mirrors and it was only $20! That picture is also a favorite of mine --
bonus!

And lastly for $20 a watercolor that seems British to me -- alas, it needs framing -- off to our local antique shops today to hopefully acquire a frame.

I am so sorry you had that problem about pictures! I mean that is like 95% of the fun of a board! To see what we are discussing, and to share accomplishments!
Geech, I wish I could figure it out for you!

I copied your finished chair to post on here
so that those who can see the photos and don't want to go 'off' territory can see.
What an amazing job you did!

Just to state again this is BDM's chair she reupholstered herself!

Linderhof,
I love that mirror, and a good price too! I had one mirror that style about 30 yrs ago. The split in the frame was so that the mirror size could stay within the 'lower tarrif' size to make it more affordable. I think it is a great way to display a mirror. And the size of yours is wonderful! I love how it fits between your doors! Oh my that beefy trim and the style of your doors, beautfiful!

The needlepoint pillow is wonderful and all that hand work for only $7, that is a great find! Love the subdued colors. And I agree, perfect for the chaise in the bedroom, I like how the dark graphic center coordinates with your other pillow and the mirror frame!

That teacup is wonderful! I love he flower bud at the bottom of the cup! And of course in your wonderful room with the great view!

I think your art is also British in flavor because they love their cows in the pasture. Nicely done and I am sure the frame you pick will make it even more special.

Skyler,
I like your mirror too, and the mirror is beveled which is a plus! I like your 'over the door' carving too.

The begining of a long journey (project-wise) for me

Mosenbocker's Lift Off Paint and varnish remover (water based) applied twice, total time = 15 minutes time invested to see what the scope of work the project will demand.

Old varnish and paint turned into a honey-like substance and then was pushed away by a scraper

Washed with steel wool after and there is still a slight residue.

This was better results than I had anticipated for this project. Now I am excited to finish my daughter's dining table (turning oak into a weathered gray finish) and then start on MY dining table!

I am so happy to see that great Mahogany (top is solid, no veneer on this table). The old oil based paint kept the top protected for so many years, and now I get to peel back that layer and enjoy that great mahogany wood on my table!

Skyler I think yours is the "brother" to Martha's! LOL. I love them both. We had copies of those pics in my childhood home.

Martha you do get great finds. I esp like the painting. Isn't it interesting that you can date needlepoint by the style of the design? I bet that pillow is from the '70s. What do you think?

Thanks so much, Mary Ruth! It's awful to see someone saying 'Here's s picture of...' and there to be nothing. I thank you for putting the chair here, which of course I can't see.

I am going to answer your question about the tack puller on the other side, and what kind I got - supposedly the best one to use.

Here is my find although not a decorative item (strictly speaking) I found this bag at the swap shop. It was very dirty. Sometimes I think I bring these pieces home just to clean them up, because I think no one else would and they deserve it! Anyway decided to keep this in my sitting room as I like to sew while watching t.v. and this is a good place to keep the projects while they are awaiting work!

This is similar to what is known as a "Gladstone" bag. And in one of those ironies of life I am currently reading a book in which Gladstone is prominently featured!

Mary Ruth, your table is going to be terrific. I think "stripping" like that is fun!

LOS -- I agree -- late 70's == the whole HOUSE was late 70's!!!! Decorated once and never again! And the living room furniture was perfect -- just not in today's colors!

Skyler -- you often see the pic from my mirror with the pic from your mirror as a set -- so yes I would say that they are "brother/sister"!

BDM -- what a great job you did -- That is one great chair!

MR -- What a great table and when you get finished with it -- it will be the gem it was intended to be!

LOS,
I like your bag! And it looks like the canvas bags I bought DH to hold small electrical tools for small jobs, he can just grab it and put it in the truck.

Linderhoff,
I wish I had not started that small patch in a way (actually 12" X 12" space) because now I want to continue and leave my daughter's table project aside! LOL BUT I also want that table of my daughter's out of here... they will come to get it as soon as it can be transported (2 1/2 hr drive one way) so I must be persistent and continue.

When I start MY dining room table project, DH will take the table apart and he will fix anything loose, re-glue, etc. And I can clean each part, then the parts will all get refinished and re-assembled for final coat of Lacquer. I will use the pumice and linseed oil method for final finish then wax. I love that look. If it is not too labor intensive for me, then I will do a dresser that is also from the same period (also Empire) that way. Since these pieces and the Empire style are my 'signature' pieces, I want to have them be the best they can be, their 'Sunday Best'!

I used to be a stickler for finishing a project, so my guess is the 'length' of some projects are now too long for me, especially since I do not have a studio to work in. I used to have a clean basement which I turned into a place to transform found treasures, boy do I MISS that studio! Sigh... I could work on 10 things at once, when something was drying or waiting for a part, I could start something else. It was amazing when sometimes I came out of the basement with 3 or 4 things done, I looked like Super Woman with all I accomplished! LOL

Thank you Mary Ruth, the door carving came from a flea market in Paris and it's one of my favorite too.

Your table is fantastic! It sounds like it's a time consuming but rewarding project. It will look fantastic when you're finished.

LOL Lady of Shallot...I stand corrected, it is the "brother". Wow, you would never know that bag was very dirty. It cleaned up nicely and it sounds like you've found a good use for it.

Nice finds. Linderhof I covet that watercolor! And BDM -- I have a chair frame (in the foreground) just waiting for your talents. I know that I am incapable (and just plain don't want to) of upholstering it but would love to see it brought back to life. It is one of the chair frames I rescued from a burn pile last summer.

ETA: apparently from the looks of the pic, it was last fall, not last summer!

My Life Vacation, those chair frames are gorgeous. If the are sturdy, it may be well worth it to take them to be professionally upholstered. You could at least get an estimate. I just think the shapes of them are beautiful!

junk collector (I really wish you would change your name because I never see you collect any JUNK! LOL

Skyler, ALL the more special that it is from France! That is an authentic French item in your home!

I fell in love with that mahogany type table many years ago when I refinished my MIL's dining table which was solid mahogany and better and larger than the one I have now. I never forgot about it and was searching all these years for one similar.

MLV,
Do a search on upholstery webbing, and see if you could master adding webbing to the back and the seat. IF you can do that, then you would have a base to hold padding and fabric! I know it sounds easy the way I wrote it, and it IS. Just scary and for some reason I trembled the first time I tried it, BUT, I laughed afterwards for having been afraid at all.

You could fit a board on the seat, but that makes a hard seat, same with the back, would be too hard.

Have you checked with upholsterer to see how much it would cost?

One time I had chairs to redo and kept putting it off, then I asked an upholsterer and he said $40 per chair including fabric. I was sold. I brought two chairs at a time on my way to work, then every few days I brought two home and then brought two more (I had 6) and it was all done!
You have only one chair to do!

Do you have fabric in mind? Painting the frame or staining it?
After all this, IF you do not want to do any of those things above, then put it on CL or bring it to a thrift store and the problem is done, no unfinished project on your To-Do list! You can move on.

I find that if I just can't get to something for long periods of time...can't decide, don't know what to do with..., it ends up more a burden than a treasure!

MLV,
Here is a youtube video explaining how to do the seat with a board (could use same method on back too) IF you wanted to use a board.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eItH7vHOW2s

While you are there on youtube you will see other upholstery videos you can watch to learn how to any one or more upholstery methods and then the mystery will be less daunting.

Here is a photo of a chair I did for my grand daughter. The back section had a one piece heavy banding like webbing, I simply reused it. The seat had webbing in place and I left it, was sturdy.

I simply recovered the bottom seat with added padding, muslin layer and then fabric.

I did my own welting and I wish I had seen the double welting tutorial that BDM posted the link to, because that was hard for me to attach as two pieces! I did two, and stapled through the middle holding both in place. With my hands not working that well, it was tough! BUT, it was like therapy because I can do this type of holding down objects better now.

MLV,
another view of the chair.

If you concentrate on one section at a time, then walk away or come back the next day, it is not as hard as it looks, just many parts but all come out as one project.

This too was my first attempt at something other than a dining chair seat or new cushion covers. I had handicaps with my hands and shoulders and still got this far. I hope to do more upholstery in the future, I am not afraid anymore, just one part at a time.

The only obstacle is if you are not a project finisher, long projects tend to make anyone lose interest, but if you are a stickler for finishing, then you can do it no matter how many steps!

Yay - the link worked, MLV, and I recall them from the good old days when I could see pics. You were asking if the board knew anything about the styles, if memory serves me correctly.

Is the finished chair with the blue fabric the one that I see the frame of in the first pic? Did you have it re-done for you?

I ADORE the frame in the foreground. If you lived anywhere near me, I'd see if you'd sell it to me, and then I'd make it come to life - what a find!

I just tried caps on Dog and Mom, and no difference. Maybe if I re-register and try the 3 after the name, it'll help.

I'm tempted to contact the board admins and ask them to look at my profile and see if there is anything that they can suggest. It was the HUGE avatar that started the whole thing. I also don't see a choice of 'standard' avatars when I go into my profile now, so can't change back to one of those. I've got 'Nuttin, Honey'!

Is your avatar a picture of your dogs in front of a fireplace? If so, your your avatar is 49.71 KB. You need to resize your picture to 10KB, 20KB at the most.

Also your avatar so large that it pushing what you post to the far right. Your information beneath your post is over to the right and the "quote" and "report" buttons are stacked top to bottom instead of side by side.

Have you tried logging out and signing in again? When you click on the thread try right clicking and clicking on reload. That's what works for me when the boards go kerflooey on me.

YW Brittany Dog Mom to 3. Please continue to bug us about the problem you're having. It's the only way we will know that board members are having a problem. There are other board members who have been posting about the problems they have been having.

How did you contact the Administrators? When I had a problem the last time they messed up the boards the only way I got it resolved was by clicking on Technical issues that is highlighted in blue on the second row beneath the messages. When I clicked on that link it opened up an email to the Webmaster. They are the ones who emailed me and resolved the problem.

BDM your avatar is NORMAL!! Woohoo!!!

MR I remember that chair -- beautiful. You folks "almost" have me convinced to try it. Maybe I will save it as my one month project when I go to Fla. in February. Or maybe a cold January here in Ohio. I know there are tons of bold beautiful fabrics I would like to see on it....nothing safe going on this chair. I look around my very small living room now and there is a black deer hide rocker, an upholstered dining side chair (beige and tiny roses), my goldish brown tapestry looking recliner and an overstuff cushiony faux brown leather rocker/recliner. I want a big flashy colorful print. Guess I'd better start looking. You folks certainly have the gift of persuasion.

BDM the other chair in the pic also came off the burn pile -- never did find out what it was but saw one almost like it on ebay that sold for over $300 and he just described it as mid century modern - oak. I covered the cushions myself -- no welting, just plain straight lines with already on-hand fabric. I've tried selling it on CL and 2 yard sales for $125 -- no one is interested. So it is now gracing my covered (not enclosed) front porch. The thought has briefly flashed through my mind to paint it white -- it's well poly'd so the wood is protected so that future owner's would be able to easily strip it. Time will tell.

I wanna see MR's CHAIR! Hopefully the admins will write me back and say that they have fixed the issues that are plaguing many of us.
MLV1 - great job on your chair covers - nothing wrong with no welting. If we didn't have cool weather here last weekend, I would not have finished my chair. Starting tomorrow, we are supposed to have temps in the 90s with humidity. I'll be a limp rag, and unable to function. Your plans to do your chair on a cold day sounds like a great way to keep warm.

I get a lot of fabric on eBay - start your search and prepare to have a hard time making up your mind! FabricGuru.com is also great. I recently got this fabric http://www.housefabric.com/KUR...DON-COIN-P45239.aspx that is $69.95 a yard at this site for $13.00 for a three yard remnant at Fabric Guru. Not sure what I'll do with it yet, but I couldn't resist!

Sorry you can't see the photos yet. You saw the chair before, I did it last year, it is black, white and hot pink. I will post the photo on your GW thread for now.

I'm late checking in this week, but I wanted to say how much I'm enjoying everyone's finds and wonderful upholstery projects.

Hope this isn't too late for Monday Morning! I keep forgetting to post this find, and people were talking about these rugs.

DD gave me this some months ago and I put it on the front porch 2 or 3 weeks ago. It is recycled plastic. Came with sticky tape things to hold it in place and since one end is under the door sill, I put them all at the steps end. It has not shifted at all. Is impervious to rain (we've had a lot) and so far seems to be a great addition to my blue and white porch!
