We're adding a bathroom and walk-in closet. The vanity will be 60 inches wide and the mirror probably about 48 inches because space had to be left for power outlets. Would you choose a 48 inch wide light bar or 40 inch? The electrician said it would be great if I could find a 40 inch but I'm thinking more around 48 inch.

Probably can go either way. Is the mirror square? Does it have a frame? If the mirror is ornate, keep the light fixture minimal yet functioning for ease of viewing. When you say "light bar" are you thinking broadway lights w/ exposed bulbs? If so, some consider them dated. Keep in mind that a strip light featuring two or more globes comes in a varity of styles. Some of the strips are curved or scrolly vs. straight. Factor in the amount of light you'll need to have a clear view especially if applying makeup or contacts tho a seperate expanding, magnifying makeup mirror is often teamed w/ a vanity mirror in bathrooms.

I don't have the mirror yet but I am planning on a frame around it. The type of light I'm referring to is a decorative vanity light that has the globes or whatever that can turn up or down. I'm concerned that the mirror will not be wide enough though.

RR, I found this online but really, I think you could do either one. I would say that it depends on what light you choose too.

"Usually, the mirror is 75% (3/4) the width of the vanity. Then, your light should be 3/4 the size of your mirror. Many people use a 24-inch light with a 36-inch mirror, which is a little smaller than the 75% rule, but still okay."

If you have two sinks, you might consider two framed mirrors and two lightbars.

If it isn't too late...lights placed on either side of a mirror are much more effective at lighting your face (for all the obvious reasons) than lighting over a mirror, which will cast shadows. Just a thought....
