So I thought I had it narrowed down but we have made some changes to the flooring so i want to make sure my choices will still work.

I have choosen BM Old Navy in the matte paint for the kitchen and then either BM Ashwood or Edgecomb Grey for the ajoining Family Room.

Currently there is a dark blue laminate counter in the kitchen and a blue ceramic floor. We are taking out the ceramic and replacing it with a more neutral floor. We MAY take out the counter and replace it with another laminate counter probably in a black, to flow with the appliances.

The carpet in the family room is being replaced with a chocolate hardwood and I will repaint the fireplace in cloud white.

So, do you think my current paint selection will go nicley in this space?

If not what are your suggestions.

I have attached pics

winterphobic, you KNOW I like your color sense -- but I actually think I would flip the colors. Your kitchen will be quite dark with Old Navy and I think EG will work better there. Then your taupe couches will stand out better with the ON in the family room. Lots of white trim/fireplace, a light area rug on the dark hardwoods...very nice. Also, it'll be more like a home theatre (for your Canadian spelling Big Grin) with a dark background for the TV. Makes watching it easier.

But it IS a nice combination. If you end up with the ON in the kitchen, then when you change out the countertop, I would think about a lighter color, not black. I think the dark walls and the black appliances are enough dark.

Having said all that...I'm fretting about the two colors in what doesn't look to be a large space. I would probably go Edgecomb Gray for both rooms to unite the space. I know you want to bring the light in, especially in the winter.

Casey,

I love that pic you posted!!! Is it Egdecomb?? That would be great for the family room but, I really do not want a light colour in the kitchen with those cabinets. I HATE the colour that is in their now and finds it just washes the whole kitchen out.

If Old NAvy is too dark then I think I have to find something that is darker than Edgecomb Grey. Maybe Jamsborough Gold or Ranchwood??? Though I love that pic you posted and could accent with Navy. But what colour for the kitchen that would allow for the lighter colour in thefamily room?
Also once the lighter floor is in there will only be dark appliances, everything else will be light, there is very little wall space in the kitchen, and it has southern exposure. See I'm trying to justify the use of a dark colour.
BUT I will listen to the experts here as I'm VERY new to all of this and like the results I have seen you all help people with.

Also, for your reference the rooms are not that big at all.
The kitchen is 10.5 x20 and the Family Room is 16.5x 11.5

The furniture in that room is not mine, that's a pic form the MLS listing. Here's the furniture going in the room.

Been looking at it on the visualizer -- dang, that ON and EG combination is pretty. If the floor is going to be light, then, yes, you can go dark on the walls. Though I still think a creamy limestone-colored countertop if you DO go dark.

umm, and yes that pic is EG. A makeover from House Beautiful. I also love the little sprinkling of dark brown with the navy and the EG. Nice accent color.

Well, wanna play a game. If I don't go with the Navy, what colour would you go with for the kitchen and the family room.
If I go with a dark counter AND if I go with a light one.

okay...I've been playing around with the CBN visualizer from

www.colorcharts.org

just the trial one. Which let me take your pic and colorize the pic with their trial fandeck which just happens to include the BenM Historical Collection! However, it won't let me save or export my poor attempts. Frown
The nice thing is that you're actually playing with the colors from the fandeck. And Old Navy wasn't available but Hale Navy was. And my conclusions are: Edgecomb Gray is too light for your kitchen. And the navy really looks super. So just ignore me.

(You might go check out the CBN visualizer however. If you spend the $29.95 for the full version, then you have access to ALL fandecks available on that site. Including the P&L.)

You could take a screenshot, save it to your computer and then post it as a photo...

Not sure how this works w/ a MAC, but with a PC:

Up at the top of your keyboard there should be a key that says something like Insert/PrintScreen.
To save your picture of what you did, have that screen up, and hit "PrintScreen."
Then open up any photo program (this even works in MS Word), and hit "Paste".

What you get is a picture of your full computer screen. Crop out everything but the part you want to show to ppl, the picture. Then save it as a file, and post like any other picture.

Hope this isn't too confusing: I am AWFUL at explaining things or giving directions. This really is a very simple process; didn't mean to make it sound more complicated than it is!

I am trying to play with the free downloadable version, but I am not good at using it.

Paint chips that I am looking at for the kitchen are if not Navy are...
Taos Taupe
Whitall Brown
Buckhorn
Alexandria Beige
Barnboard
Kingsport Gray
Fairview Taupe

P&L Cafe Gray and Diplomat Gray

I really need some direction.

If I don't go with Navy in the kitchen then i might use it in the Dining Room or Powder room. Maybe accent with Navy in accents or drapery for the family room

So confused right now

Winterphobic, this is the navy colour in your living room...I am confused from reading the thread, though...I think I got it wrong b/c now it looks like you wanted the navy in the kitchen, right?

BRB with that one.

Btw in the mockup I left off the decorative objects on mantel, etc., just to save a little time. I did put your picture back up on the wall.

Thanks Periparker!

Yup, you're right, I am considering navy for the kitchen. It doesn't look too bad in the pic but I think IRL it will apear darker and more navy which is what I want.
I am also now considerign moving the navy to the powder room or dining room and doing accents of navy with throw pillows and draperies in the family room.

Now I am having trouble thinking of another colour for the kitchen. Oh my, I'm losing my mind!

Why didn't it work? It should have...

I've always loved this avatar. I found another cutie the other night and considered switching but felt guilty about getting rid of the girl & her kitty, lol.

Is that Old Navy? Cuz I thought it was darker too. However, that looks smashing! I think your first instinct was a good one.

It is Old Navy, Casey, you can see the swatch in the picture above. It does look lighter than the swatch, I agree...the best that these mockups can do is give someone a general idea most of the time, b/c the colour differentials are so varied on our monitors, and of course the amount of light in the room makes a huge difference in how the paint colour appears.

I was going to ask Winter what colour her ceilings are, like most of our ceilings in pics hers look grayish...I am thinking the colour would look much deeper if the ceiling were whitened up.

LOL, on the "Canadian spelling"...I picked up "colour" as opposed "color" from a long time correspondence with a Canadian internet friend...I try to stop myself as it looks "affected" but I just type it without thinking.

It always used to crack me up when my friend would write about waiting for a "cheque" to come in the mail!

Bear with me, 'cuz I'm confused. Big Grin

I think you don't like your kitchen cabinets. I don't understand how or why you think a dark navy is going to help you feel better about the cabinets.

1. I don't like blue kitchens. Especially dark blues with no edge of green.

2. Dark navy eats light almost as dramatically as a black due to wavelengths and a bunch of other boring stuff. BenM's Old Navy has a LRV of 4.2. So, IMO, navy walls in a kitchen could be a bad move.

3. Lighting looks pretty average in your kitchen and certainly not enough to support navy on the walls -- even minimal square footage covered in navy. Unless you have plans for more lighting.

4. It's a small space. Darker colors need room to spread out unless your goal is to play into the characteristics of smallness and cozy it up.

5. Looks like Edgecomb would work nicely with the kitchen backsplash. At least from here. Smile wondering if that might not be the better choice to help blend the cabinets into the whole of the kitchen so you add pops of navy or other colors drawing the attention away from the cabinets.

Actually I don't mind the cabinets. Not a fan of the hardware on them, which I will switch(not sure to what) I don't like the floor, which I am changing. I don't like the counters, which more than likely I'm changing and I don't like the backsplash which I am keeping anyways Frown

So I am not sure now what I will do about the navy, but I am going to try to come up with another colour option for the kitchen and family room. Though I really am not sold on using Edgecomb in the kitchen as I think it will be too washed out, but the "new" colour will have to go with the black appliances, the cabinets and the blacksplash. The flooring will be very neutral and the counter will be laminate, but I have not decided on that yet.

Okay, got a better picture now. Smile

Maybe you should get the new floor and counters in and then take a look at paint colors. The black appliances, backsplash and cabinets actually look very nice together, IMO. I think you have lovely elements to work from.
