NOTE: tho many of us can't afford quality statement pieces, we can probably achieve a similar jolt to our spaces w/ carefully planned and executed DIY pieces that are unique, beautiful and memorable "statement pieces". Suffice it to say, statement pieces need not break the bank, but if you're fortunate enough to acquire a unique, custom crafted piece, be sure not to cheapen it with visibly lesser quality furnishings while still maintaining it's focal point status. Often, simpler designed pieces teamed with a showy statement piece is adviseable to achieve this balance.

Some very interesting 'statement' pieces in those links - thanks Froo!

I think too many people are afraid of statement pieces because they fear being too different. I have the situation of being so attracted to unique items that I have to restrain myself from using too many such items! Of course I also reject the theory of only one focal point per room!

IMO statement pieces don't have to be expensive, there are many unique items available in the second hand markets and paint can turn a mundane item into a statement.

One thing about a statement piece... it should stand alone as the one piece to draw the eye and the other pieces around it are supportive.

This type of decorating is as restrictive as a two color such as blue and white. But so dramatic when done right.

Mary Ruth, can you comment on the rooms at this link, some of which seem to have more than one statement piece. Very often, especially in eclectic style decor there are *usually* more than one piece per room that could be called a statement piece. I admit I have some difficulty with the subject as have filled my house with unusual things, any of which could be said to make a statement.

ETA - I was especially thinking about this site and the room which has a fur throw on the chair, a cowhide rug, and a turned aluminum table. Other rooms in her house also have several unique statement pieces in one room. http://www.theartofdoingstuff.com/my-house/

I think the statement piece in the photos shown are actually small in that they need another piece to carry them like the pieces are not eccentric enough to be ONE in the room.

the first few photos:
The first one with 'Shaunna's Big Fiddle' is, to me, the most important piece. The mirror supports its elegance. The room )not being too sophisticated) shows us that the gal (Shaunna is young) rehearses in this area.

2nd:
Karen's fur covered chair is awesome, though I like the table as the focal point. The animal references (skins, horns and wood flooring) are giving us a natural feeling to counteract the modern light, table, lights and shelves. To me in this photo the whole bookcase vignette would be the showstopper in the room.

The chesterfield sofa is a show stopper no matter where it shows up. That sofa is near perfect in any setting!
It is the Sean Connery of sofas (gets better with age).

But it is the 'signature' piece that starts it off. Like the 'Margaret' portrait. I have been in a normal sized room with a painting of the lady done in life size. I tell you that is powerful, here I am talking to the woman and her painting is like 5' away! The rest of the room is made to coordinate (she likes natural and modern together).

There is no rule, but if you start putting imaginative accessories, then of course you carry that throughout the house. And there is no rule as to one, two, or three pieces. But you do notice if you only do one in one room and no surprises in other rooms that follow.

You can't do this wrong if you are the lover of this style, it is unique as the person who lives there.
If you find one signature piece, it is usually the one thing that you start with and decorate around, you showcase it.
