I made a padded headboard for my daughter some 4 years ago and thought I did a good job. But it seems that late last year there appeared to be bugs in the headboard and attacking her at night. They were not bed bugs as we checked this out carefully. They were black & look to be smaller than bed bugs. At any rate I got rid of the headboard, but my daughter loved it and wants me to do another one.
I used wood, batting a little foaming and fabric. Stapled to the wood, but not completely around the wood. Which means the wood was exposed at the back. And I found some of the bugs in the material at the back of the headboard where I stapled it to the wood.
Is there anything I should do different this time to eliminate the arrival of bugs later.

I don't think you likely did anything wrong with construction of the headboard. I would be concerned with where the bugs came from and be very sure they are not bedbugs.
Bedbugs are almost epidemic worldwide so are not difficult to pick up almost anywhere. Cleanliness has nothing to do with the problem. So far I've avoided them but do think about it and check carefully especially after traveling.
There are natural products which can discourage bedbugs as well as other bugs which you can research online.

call an exterminator, they may have infested something else in that room, and possibly your basement, or through the exterior of your home entering the home. Identifying the pest will help you get rid of it.

I agree with the suggestion to ID the bug. Take one in a jar or ziplock bag to an exterminator. Knowing where this bug came from and his diet will be most beneficial. Untreated lumber can attract various bugs. FYI, I once decorated a large grapevine wreath for a client only to learn some time later that it was infested with powder post bettles which, like termites, love wood. I made her a replacement wreath on a wire form free of charge and have been reluctant to use craft store grapevine wreaths since even tho I know they are sprayed. Once learned you can take necessary precautions to eliminate the reoccurrence. Let us know your findings. Your experience could help others considering a similar project.
