I'm redoing kitchen/dining area which is the only eating area in my condo. I want a drum shade of some sort over the table. Could anyone tell me what type of kitchen fixture would blend with a drum type fixture. I'm really lost regarding light fixtures. I'm thinking of something like this with though I may chose to cover it with a print fabric. Thanks for your thoughts. ![]()

If you cover this type of drum shade with fabric, you will greatly decrease the light that would normally filter though the shade. So, you will need task lighting. A center of room light is usually good for when you need to be working in the kitchen and doing cleaning tasks (you must be able to see where the dust and dirt is! lol) Then the drum shade would provide great ambiance lighting for eating, then you might have under the cabinet lighting for small tasks on the counter. If you want another 'spot' light for task or mood, you really can go with any style that has the same arm or post metal as your drum shade since it is a small space. I would not go for one with a bare lightbulb style, perhaps a frosted glass shade or pendent with diffused glass shade. Without photos and an electrical plan I could only be vague about suggestions. You must specify where you need lighting and what task it will accomplish in order to truly get your lighting needs met. Good luck with your project! Thanks Mary Ruth, I need a ceiling light in the kitchen area. I looked a bit and thought "wow" I haven't paid too much attention to what is popular right now. Do they use lights with a short stem in the kitchen? I'm off to look again today. I'll look for the same finish as the pendant. Hope somethingcatches my eye!!

I am not sure what is used most but I think that if you customize your lighting to suit your needs you will do OK. Do a search for pics and post a few that you want to coordinate, I am sure you will get some votes to help you decide! I would add that having a washable fixture in the kitchen is nice as kitchen fixtures tend to attract residues from cooking.

thanks Gracie and Mary Ruth, I found a light I liked today called a semi-flush mount. It almost looks like a schoolhouse fixture except for the silver mount. Somewhat like the one below. Is this okay for a kitchen? ![]()

Annie, I like that fixture! Nice, modern, clean lines, washable globe. I think that is a winner! Mary Ruth ![]() *****We don't see things as they are, we see things as WE are! ***** (Anaias Nin)***** http://pinterest.com/mary_ruth/

How about this one? Which to you think blends better with the drum shade? ![]()

They both go, but the more 'designer' match as some might call it, LOL is the other one, the squared lines of the globe and I like the small detail underneath. If the smaller light is in a pantry or back hall and you wanted to match, then this fixture would work. But in the same line of sight that squared one is better. Annie the second fixture is similar or maybe even the same as those I have in my kitchen. I chose them because they duplicated the fixtures that were original to this 1905 house. Personally I would like lower but still ceiling fixtures if space allows. Like over an island. Also of course, something washable.

I think the first one looks more contemporary.

Thanks ladies!! I've got to get that drum shade ordered now. Think I'll go with the more modern looking kitchen light. Annie
