JUST FOR THE FUN OF LOOKING:

I wanted to share this because how often do you see Vintage furniture on Craigslist in this good and clean condition? From the 70's.

$1,000 for the whole set up.

Ad reads: VINTAGE EARLY 1970'S DINING ROOM SET WHICH INCLUDES 4 CHAIRS, CHINA CABINET AND HUTCH. LIVING ROOM SUITE WITH COFFEE TABLE AND TWO END TABLES WITH LAMPS. DON'T HESITATE THIS GREAT DEAL WON'T LAST

AVAILABLE FOR PICK UP.

This is obviously part of an Estate sale.

Yes that is plastic you see covering some pieces.

I am not a fan of this furniture but had to show how clean and presentable this all is.
The people must have taken good care of all their stuff.

With those finds, you could totally be in my neighborhood! Fabulous sofa and I bet the upholstery is good as new underneath the plastic covers! I saw a similar table at an estate sale - could seat twelve easy and the chairs had turquoise leather seats. Very pricey!

I was going to post a couple of vintage CL finds myself - not 1970's and definitely not in the same lovely condition - but such fabulous pieces that I wish we had a bigger house!

First find - $75.00 and in need of major TLC

And a second couch - the upholstery is a little over the top, but the frame is gorgeous! This one is a bit more - 259.00

Mary Ruth, I have my MIL 1970's heavy and strudy 70s bedroom furniture. It has the plastic fronts. Although I like the front of mine better than those on this set, I would love to change the drawer fronts. I've spent a lot of time online trying to find an example of how to remove the plastic and "restyle" the door and drawer fronts. So far no luck. I have seen it painted, but that doesn't improve the "tacky" element of the plastic for me. My husband laughed because I wanted to break and pry the plastic off, pad the drawer fronts and put faux leather and nailhead trim on the drawer fronts. He said, "You are trading plastic for plastic. What is the point?"LOL

I often wonder if that 1970's furniture will every be back in style the way MCM is today.

junk collector,
I LOVE that first sofa! I would so buy that for that price! I would put the seat part on a toe kick assembly and use it for a settee for my dining room table. Love the lines of that! OF course it needs total reno underneath and fabric but I so love the Empire lines!

You are right, that second frame is gorgeous! Love the neat lines of it!

busyjo,
Wow, that set lasted a long time!I am not sure that removing the plastic will work, I guess you would have to call a refinisher and let him tell you the 'nightmare' of doing such a set before beginning any reno with it.

Graciepj,
NOT so sue it will come back, though it could be restyled because Marrakech design is popular and has some great prints along with that Mediterranean look of low horizontal looking furniture. I can't wait to see what designers do with this stuff to repurpose it!

MCM will always be more popular because you do not have to 'do' anything to it to use it, the modern lines are still 'today' looking!

And for $75.00!! That would so be worth the investment into re-upholstering it. And it would look super-duper with that empire style table you scored not too far back - the Imperial Furniture/Grand Rapids piece. Too bad I can't mail it to you!

I think the 70's vintage sofa would look fantastic in several different settings. These things come and go, but a quality piece will always be popular. It is hard to see in the pics, but that couch looks to have very nice fabric, and orange is HOT these days. The large dining table is a gem too.

Junk Collector - What state are you in? Those couches are FABULOUS. Absolutely ADORE that first couch regardless of price.
BDM gets great buys in Maine.

I don't even bother looking at Craig's List here in my city of 1 M because there is never anything on it.

I'm in NM and the second-hand (or third or fourth as the case may be) market is very active - and competitive.

When it comes to decor pieces (crocks, mirrors, artwork, etc) and small tables, the indoor flea markets, thrifts, and booth-style stores are the better deals. When it comes down to chairs, couches, and dining sets, CL and estate sales have the best deals. ESPECIALLY on the vintage pieces that are not quite MCM, but also not yet antique. People just view it as "old".

Mary Ruth - is the add for the furniture you posted listing ALL the furniture for 1000? Or was that the price for just one set (dining vs living)?

and besides the plastic covering the furniture, you can tell no one even uses that room...look at the carpet...no show of use.

junk collector,
It said $1,000 for all! The 4 pictures were on the same CL post. That is why I thought it was a good deal and being in such good condition!

I wish I had a place for that CL Empire sofa... sure would look good here, but DH would kill me if I took something on that big I had to store in the garage till I could get to it!

Always,
A lot of houses and condos in Florida are only used a few months (winter) out of the year. And sometimes one of the couple is sick or they can't travel for a few years and sometimes a place gets left empty for 10 yrs! They have cleaning service, yard & pool service keep going and someone watching out for the house.

Well, now we know, even though your bare legs stuck to it in the summahtime, plastic covered furniture was for the best!

OMG, MR -- A trip down memory lane. So many neighbors, friends and relatives had this kind of over-the-top 60s and 70s faux European furniture complete with the plastic covers. We did not have this stuff in our home; my mom hated it.

It was referred to back then -- and not in a kindly way -- as Long Island Renaissance. Big Grin
